Hornets hold on for first win

After dropping two tough region 1 AAA
gomes to Central Fellowship Christian Academy
and Stratford, the Westfield Hornets finally
broke into the win column with a 62-57 win
over the Fullington Trojans.
In their first region gome of the year, the
Hornets bottled the CFCA Lancers into two over
times before dropping a pulsating 70-69 deci
sion Westfield broke on top in the first quarter
as sophomore Bo Hart came off the bench to
ignite o rally with seven first-quarter points.
The Hornets led 16-14 after one period.
But the Loncers held the Westfield offense to
just nine points in the second quarter, taking a
30 25 half-time lead. By the end of the third
quarter, the Lancers' lead was up to nine points
as the Westfield starters were Wd to just 19
points over the first three auarters.
In the fourth quarter, tnough, the Hornets'
offense came to life, reeling off 19 points,
including two three-pointers by Brian Hartley.
Ben Lutnei kept the Lancers from completery
blowing their lead as he conned a couple of
treys and eight of the Lancer' 10 fourth quar
ter points.
After the Hornets had cut the Lancers' lead
to 52-49 on a Hartley trey and Robert Causey's
three point ploy, CFCA pulled ahead again SB
-51 with two minutes left in regulation.
Hartley hit cnother trey and Daniel Weir
followed with o basket to make it 58-56 with a
minute left After a Lancers' turnover, the
Hornets got the ball back with 22 seconds left,
but couldn't get a shot off.
After turning the ball over themselves,
Hartley made a steal and fed Weir for the tying
basket The Hornets dodged a bullet when they
committed a foul with three seconds left..but
the Lancers missed and the game went into
overtime tied at 58-58.
The Hornets went ahead 63-60 when Will
Sexton hit a pair of free throws with 25 sec
onds left, but the Lancer' Gran Sumrall tied the
game again with a trey, sending the teams into
the second overtime.

With the Lancers leading 68-67, Weir
scored with just five seconds left, but the
Loncers manaaed to get the ball all the way up
court to their foul line where Ben Luther hit an
off balance jumper at the buzzer to deny the
Hornets their first win
Weir scored all six of Westfield's points in
the second overtime period and finished the
game with 16 to share team honors with
Hartley. Luther scored 21 for the Loncers.

Stratford freshmon Kyle Johnston came off
the Eagles' bench to score 17n points, including
11 in the fourth quarter as the Eagles picked
up an important 46-38 region 1 AAA victory
over Westfield at the Hornets' Nest Jon 8 It
was o low scoring defensive struggle in which
the Hornets shot just four free throws, never
going to the foul line in the second half! But
they managed to hang around, and it took
Johnston's heroics in the fourth quarter to
finally put the Hornets away as the freshman
kept coming through with big baskets when the
Hornets would get dose. With 6:20 left in the
game, Robert Causey pulled the Hornets to
within one at 33-32, nut Matthew Terry hit two
free throws and Johnston followed with a three
Enter to make it 38-32. A minute and a half
sr, Daniel Weir's basket brought the Hornets
back to within two at 38-36, but again
Johnston drilled a three pointer and followed it
with two free throws to Icill the Hornets' hooes
for a comeback

B-team takes three
The Westfield Hornets B-team boys
rebounded from their only loss of the season
with three wins last week. On Jan. 5 at
Central Fellowship Christian Academy, the
Hornets and Lancers locked up in a great has
ketball game that wasn't decided until the
final second of the game. Westfield led 29-24
at half-time before the Lancers pulled into a
35-35 tie after three quarters. In the fourth
quarter, with the score bock and forth, Ben
Brannen scored for Westfield off a Chance
Jones pass, giving the Hornets a 40-39 lead
with 1:10 left in the game Thirty seconds
later, Kory Kitchens hit two free throws for a
three point lead, but with just 16 seconds left,
a three pointer tied the score for the Lancers.
That set the stage for a dramatic ending as
Chance Jones got the ball on the right wing
and drove the right baseline to the basket,
going up for a driving lay-up with just a half
second left in the game giving the Hornets a
44-42 win, their fourth ofthe year against just
a loss to First Presbyterian.

Will Holt hit a three pointer on the first
shot of the game and Westfield went on to
score 22 first quarter points Jan. 8 at the
Hornets' Nest in their first home game in a
month as the Hornets B-team picked up win
number five with a 61-57 win over Stratford.
The Hornets led by twelve at half-time but
a 12 coinl Stratford fun in the third tied the
score at 37-all before Cole Dunnawoy's tree
throw with four minutes left in the third quar
ter gave the lead back to Westfield. The
Hornets than Haiti ten of 12 free throws over
the final 2:10 of the game, including two by
Holt with 1:10 left that gave the Hornets a

with Holt to score 35 points for the Hornets.
Wes Faulkner was again impressive off the
Westfield bench, Ben Brannen continued his
outstanding work on the backboards and
Kory Kitchens again did an outstanding job
running the HorneK' offense

The Westfield B-team Hornets wasted lit
tie time in putting awoy the Fullington
Trojans Jan. 9, scoring 24 points in the first
quarter and coasting to a 47-7 half-time
lead. The Hornets won the game 67-23,
improving their record to 6-1 for the year.

Hornets below .500 mark

The Westfield Lady Hornets watched
their season record drop to 4-5 with
weekend losses to Stratford and
Fullington, after a region lAAA win
over Central Fellowship Christian
Academy earlier in the week.
Against CFCA Jan. 5, Westfield had
to offset 10 points by the Lancers' Casey
Collins for a 46-41 win. The Lady
Hornets had a chance to put the game
away in the fourth quarter, shooting 23
free throws, but could only convert nine
shots, allowing the Lancers to stay with
in striking distance. Westfield led by 14
with 4:10 left in the game after Rachel
Moore scored off a steal, but the Lancers
kept coming back behind Collins and
Jenny Foster, who scored all seven of
her points in the fourth quarter.
The win was the Lady Hornets'
fourth against three losses, and put them
at 1-0 in region 1 AAA.

Playing their first game at home in a
month wasn’t enough for the Westfield
Lady Hornets as Kailey Cotton broke
open a close game with 14 third quarter
points in Stratford’s 59-37 region 1 AAA
win over Westfield Jan. 8 at the Hornets'
Nest.
Lina Arnold scored eight of
Westfield’s 13 first half points as the
Eagles got eight from freshman Kate
Sams to take a 19-13 halftime lead.
Cotton went to work after the break, hit
ting consistently from outside in scoring
14 points. Arnold had seven to keep the
Lady Hornets in the game as they trailed
by a dozen after three quarters.
With just eight players on his bench,
Stratford coach Paul Brooks was forced
to keep at leasi two starters in the game
despite leads of more than 20 points in
the fourth quarter.
Arnold’s 19 points took game hon
ors, while Cotton scored 17 for the
Eagles. The loss evened the Lady
Hornets' overall record at 4-4, 1-1 in
region lAAA.

In a foul-marred game at the
Hornets’ Nest Jan. 9, the Fullington
Lady Trojans took a 62-46 victory from
the Lady Hornets in a non-region
matchup. After leading by ten at the
half, Fulbngton’s Lmdsey Bloodworth
and Lindsay Cason combined for five
three-pointers to open up a 51-28 lead
after three quarters. Then the parade of
free throws began as the tow teams com
bined to shoot forty free throws in the
final quarter! In all, there were 52 fouls
called i> he game, resulting in 76 free
throws.
Lina Arnold turned in another out
standing game for Westfield, scoring 18
points and pulling down a game high 21
rebounds. Arnold also had Westfield’s
only three point basket.

The Westfield girls’ B-team saw their
season record drop to 2-3 with losses to
Central Fellowship Christian Academy
and Stratford Academy.
In a low scoring game at CFCA Jan.
5. the Lancers scored nine points in the
fourth quarter to squeak out a 23-19 win.
The game had been tied at the end of the
first and second quarters, while CFCA
led by one after three. Enn Collins
scored five of her ten points in the deci
sive fourth quarter for the Lancers. The
loss evened Westfield’s record at 2-2.
Anne Peake had a basket in each quarter
for Westfield, and added a free throw for
a team high nine points.

held Westfield scoreless in the first quar
ter in jumping out to a 10-0 lead and that
proved to be the difference in Stratford's
36-28 win

over the final three quarters, but couldn’t
overcome the ten point deficit in the first
quarter. The loss dropped Westfield to
2-3 for the year. Robyn Harrison and
Amanda Jones combined for 17 of
Westfield’s points, with Jones hitting
the game’s only three pointer.
