Here are some of the types of
public notices included in this sec
tion of the Houston Times Journal:
Hearings and meeting notices
- There are a wide variety of publk
meetings which must be held in
order for a government to take an
action Among the most common
are notices of panning commission
meetings at which rezoning requests
are to tie acted upon and of hear
ings when a city or county govern
ment is setting a budget or tax rates
Sometimes these notices run as bor
dered ads on these pages.
Sometimes, governments are
required to publish notices about
upcoming meetings, especially when
a meeting is to be held outside the
regular schedule of that government
or when a change will be made in
the regular time or place of meeting.
Most of these notices are priced by
the SlO per 100 words fee.
Estate notices - There are some
20 different type of estate notkes
which can be published, the most
common of which is a notice to
creditors to let the court know if a
deceased person owes them any
money Most estate-related notices
come from the county probate
judge's office, although some are
filed directly by attorneys Many of
these notices run four times at a cost
of S4O
Incorporation notice - These
are notices conceiving a business
which is to be incorporated with (he
office located in Houston .County
Related incorporation notices can
include an intent to dissolve a cor
porate, a name change of the corpo
ration and mergers of a corporation.
These notices typically run two
weeks at a cost of MO.
Notke of elections and refer
endums - This category covers a
wide range of issues from notices to
.hold elections on alcoholic beverage
sales to notices on bond referen
dums to construct school buildings
in Houston County. Notices must
also appear concerning city and
county elections when candidates
are seeking elected public office.
These notices typically cost SlO per
100 words or fraction thereof.
Bid notices - When a local gov
ernment is going to buy something
or have work done on a project it is
often required to solicit bids via legal
notkes A related area of legal notices
involves the sale of surplus govern
ment-owned equipment which also
must be listed and published Bids for
road work, school buildings and
other public property is included in
this category A related category is
sale of items seized by the local law
enforcement departments These ads
typically are pnced at $lO per 100
words or fraction thereof
Notice of government financial
results - Most city, county and
school governments are required to
annually publish the results of their
audits The amount of detail varies
by government. Typically these
notkes are published in boxed dis
play advertisements.
Driving Under the Influence -
State law requires publication of a
picture and a brief notke of anyone
convicted in Houston County of a
third driving under the influence
charge. The fines and related matters
of settlement are included. The fee
for these ads is $25 each. These ads
run one time and typically come
from the Houston County State
Court or the municipal court of
incorporated cities
Juvenile matters - This broad
category can include notices such as
adoption, custody, juvenile court
actions, and temporary custody.
These matters frequently have fixed
fees and run for from two to four
times, depending on the order. Some
of these issues come from the
Houston County Juvenile Court,
others from the Houston County
Probate Court.
Domestic matters - These
include notkes for change of name
and for divorce when one of the
parties cannot be located locally.
Both of these items run four times
each at a cost of SBO.
Notice of sale or foreclosure
notice - These notkes are usually
run when someone, generally a
financial institution, has not received
payment on a loan. Property whkh
secures the loan is being foreclosed
on so the lender can take it to sell or
otherwise pay off the loan A similar
category is a tax sale, where the
county or a city is selling the proper
ty to collect unpaid property taxes
These notkes typkally run the four
Wednesdays prior to the first
Tuesday of the month when the
sales are held at the Houston
County Courthouse in Perry. The fee
