Remember in 1997 when
Tiger Woods was hitting a driver
ana sand wedge to the par five
15th? Woods, and other long hit
ters, were able to use the big fair
way mounds on the right of the
fairway to slingshot the ball down
the hill. The mounds, though,
have been all but eliminated, and
20 new pine trees have added.
The rough was cut to five eights
of an inch. While it doesn’t seem
like much, the rough this year will
be cut to one inch, which tourna
ment officials believe will produce

Westfield
track team has
bright spots

The Westfield Hornets track
teams, with just two more regular
season meets, have a few bright
spots as the team heads toward
the State qualifier May 1.
The boys team, under coach
Larry Bennett, looked good in
several events at the recent five
team meet at the Hornets’ Nest.
With Mount de Sales, John
Milledge, 1 Ehllingtoh ' and
Gatewood joining the Hornets
in the March 31 meet, Westfield
got first place finishes in the
triple jump, 4 by 100 relay, 200
meter run and 300 meter hurdles
in boys competition in picking
up 64.5 points.
Tate Parker took first in the
triple jump with 38.5 feet, the
relay team of Parker, Jared Shell,
Jacob Walker and Gary Virden
ran a 45.2, Shell ran a 23.94 in
the 200 meter run and Wil
Sexton took first in the 300
meter hurdles with a 45.03.
The Lady Hornets of Leigh
Ann Johnson failed to pick up a
first, but the 4 by 100 relay team
of Lauren Byrd, Whitney Wood,
Rachel Moore and Katie Byrd
looked good.
All of the remaining track
meets will be at Stratford prior to
the State meet at Hugh Mills
Stadium in Albany of May 7 and
8.

Audrell Johnson of Kathleen
was named to the fall semester
dean’s list at Georgia College &
State University.
To be selected to the dean’s list,
a student must earn a minimum
3.2 grade point average on 12 or
more hours of work for the
semester and have at least a 2.5
cumulative grade point average.

Members of the Perry
Country Club hosted the
Dogwood Festival Golf Scramble
April 2.
Approximately 50 players
making 12 teams participated in
the match according to Butch
Wilhelm, Perry Country Club
Director.
Finishing first place gross with
a combined score of 59 was the
team of John Bishop, Lee
Smallwood, Danny Perfect and

Finishing first place net with a
combined score of 58 were Jay
Rich, Jason Hill, Alice Ray and
Chris Lincecum.
Finishing second place gross
with a combined score of 61 were
Mike Gray, Chris Kinnas, Paul
Hicks and David Campbell.
Second place net with a com
bined score of 60 went to Marcus
Walker, Leighton Nichols, Joe
Rich and Jason Noles.
Finishing third place gross
with a combined score of 63 was
the team of Bobby Harrison,
Brad Gunter and Jerry Kimsey.
In third place with a c6m
bined score of 62 were John
Record, Jo Crumpacker, Stuart
Mcpherson and Brent
Wieschhorster.
Prizes and trophies were
awarded to the winning players
in a ceremony following the
match.
Jackson completes
LackUand training
Air Force Airman Frank R.
Jackson Jr. has graduated from
military training at Lackland Air
Force B ase, San Antonio, Texas.
During the six weeks of train
ing, the airman studied the Air
Foree' missiony organization-, and
customs and received special
training in human relations.
In addition, airman who com
plete basic training earn credits
toward an associate degree
through the Community College
of the Air Force.
Jackson is the son of Cheryl
Jackson and Frank R. Jackson Sr.
both of Perry.
The airman is a 1998 graduate
of Perry High School.
