the 48th Infantry Brigade
(Mechanized) of the Georgia
Army National Guard is part of
two 1 new „
Component/National -Guard
Integrated Divisions announced
this week by the Department of
the Army.
The two Active
Component/National Guard
Integrated Divisions will be acti

to Lt. Col. Ken Baldowski.
The 7th Infantry Division will
be located at Fort Carson, Colo,
and the 24th Infantry Division
will be at Fort Riley, Kan. Both
divisions have had National
Guard affiliations in the past.
Georgia’s 48th Infantry
Brigade (Mechanized) of the
Georgia Army National Guard
will be one of the National Guard
enhanced brigades included in
the Integrated Divisions,
Baldowski said.
These division headquarters
will be commanded by an active
component major general and
each will be comprised of three
Army National Guard enhanced
brigades. Baldowski said the
Army National Guard enhanced
brigades are the principal Reserve
Component ground combat
maneuver forces of the United
States Army.
The term “enhanced” refers to
increased resources and manning
priorities with the improved
training strategies during
pre-mobilization that ensures
their ability to be ready to deploy
by 90 days after call up. The
brigades will be organized,
equipped and sustained to be
doctrinally employable, com

logistically supportable by any US
Armv corps or division.
The 7th Infantry Division was
last organized as a light infantry

Fort Ord, Calif in 1994. When
reactivated it will consist of the
41st Infantry Brigade, Ore., the
45th Infantry Brigade, Olda., and

at Fort Stewart, Ga. in 1996
when the Army reduced to 10
divisions. When reactivated it
will consist of the 30th Infantry
Brigade (Mechanized), N.C., the

Farmers have strawberries
ready to pick
MACON Georgia straw
berry-growers have been busy all
winter with hopes of producing
another perfect crop of berries.
That perfect crop is now ready to
be picked, according to Ed
Thornton of the Georgia Farm
Bureau.
It’s not just picking berries that
lures people out to the farm. It’s
the adventure. Strawberry con
noisseurs agree consumers can
certainly taste the difference
between fresh picked berries and
those bought at the grocery store.
Strawberry plants are planted
in the fall. Growers must prepare
the soil and form beds, which are
covered with plastic mulch. An
irrigation tube buried inside the
strawberry bed supplies water and
nutrients to the plants.
Thornton said overhead irriga
tion is also used to protect the
plants from frost and freeze dam
age. When the temperature gets
below freezing, farmers apply
water over the tops of the plants.
The water freezes to form a layer
of ice which insulates and pro
tects the plants from winter dam
age.
When picking berries, choose
berries that are fully ripe. They
should be a deep red color with
no or very little white flesh
around the stem. Pinch the stem
so that you do not damage the
berry.
Thornton said to leave the
stem attached until after washing
or water will enter the berry. Store
unwashed berries in the refrigera
tor for only a few days. They are
best if used immediately. Washed
