Health Department joining national effort to vaccinate children
Special to the Times lournai
The Perry Health Department
will stay open until 7 p.m. on April
22, offering free immunizations to
children under two years of age
between the hours of 4 p.m. and 7
p.m.
The event is part of a national
effort to increase the number of chil
dren who are vaccinated against pre
ventable diseases.
“We’ll have face paining, a clown
making balloon animals and special
videos for the children, as well as door
prizes,” said Chris Sikes, RN. “Any
child who is vaccinated during the

value of the business is difficult to
determine; therefore, a tremen
dous amount of legal squabbling
with the IRS over the value
begins. The usual result is the
business or farm must be sold,
downsized, or liquidated just to
pay the tax collector and the
lawyers.
Federal Reserve Chairman
Alan Greenspan has said that

The special extended clinic has
the purpose of increasing community
awareness of the need for early vacci
nations. Children need 80 percent of
their vaccinations in the first two
years of life to protect them against
disease, disability and even death,
according to medical experts.
There have been many innova
tions in immunizations since the first
vaccination was administered by Dr.
Edward Jenner 200 years ago, and
favor of consumption.
I believe the Death Tax stifles
economic growth, and cuts other
federal tax receipts, such as
income and payroll taxes. The
Heritage Foundation estimates
that an average of 145,000 new
jobs would be created annually if
the tax were repealed.
In 1997, revenue from the tax
was about one percent of total
federal taxes. This revenue is
washed by cost of administration
and the loss of payroll, income
and other taxes when businesses
(farms) are destroyed and jobs are
on the disabled list. The Braves
were forced to call up a couple of
rookies the first week of the sea
son, something they definitely
didn’t want to do.
The one bright spot has been
the pitching of Macon native
John Rocker. The First
Presbyterian graduate pitched in
three games, although he faced
just one batter in his first appear
ance.

Long-time barber and stylist reflects on changes in hair cuts
By CHARLOTTE PERKINS

Hair cutting was a simpler
matter when Dale Grim started
his career in 1959, fresh out of
Barber College in Henderson, Ky.
Nobody was talking then
about shags, hair design, sculp
ture and razor cuts, ana men had
never thought about having their
hair colored or permed.
“Time and hair,” Grim said,
“have come a long way. Over the
years, I have gone from hair ton
ics and flat tops to hair spray,
blow dryers, perms, color and cut
ting women’s hair as well as
men’s.”
While he got his start in
Kentucky, he had always wanted
to head south to get away from
the cold winters, and that’s the
way he wound up in Perry.
“My destination was Florida,”
he remembered, “but I made a
brief stop in Perry and liked it so
well I decided to stay.”
In 1963, he opened his first
one-chair shop on Courtney
Hodges Boulevard in the build
ing that is now City Seafood.
Then in 1964, he relocated to
Perry Plaza and opened a larger
shop.

innovations help to reduce the num
ber of vaccine-preventable diseases.
The benefits of vaccinations far
outweigh the risks. In 1999, according
to Sikes, a modification in the polio
vaccination schedule was made. The
oral polio vaccine is no longer recom
mended for the first two doses, except
in rare circumstances, the first two
doses should be inactivated polio vac
cine at two and four months, followed
by two doses of die oral vaccine at six
to 18 months and four to six years of
age. This improved dosing is safer than
the previous use of all oral vaccine.

ance cost alone eat up 65 cents on
every $1 collected.
University of Southern
California Law Professor Edward
McCaffrey said the following
about the Death Tax. “The tax
discourages behavior that a liber
al, democratic society ought to
like work, savings, bequests
and encourages behavior that
such a society ought to suspect
the large scale consumption, and
leisure of the very rich.
