“ That was the worst time,”
Drew said, “ I was in the shower
with shampoo in my hair.”
Where was the baby?
He had left it on the bathroom
counter.
EJ. Lowe’s “baby", as he
described it, “acted the fool”
and since E.J.’s dad had to go to
work the next morning, little E.J.
Jr. got turned off.
How do you turn off a crying
baby? (Parents everywhere want
to know.)
Well, if the key doesn’t work,
you can “take out the box.”
because the babies in this case are
highly realistic, surprisingly heavy
baby dolls equipped with a
sound all parents know about a
persistent wailing sound, likely to
start up at any time.
“It bugged me,” Markclla
Embree said. “It cried a lot."
Dustin Waldrip’s mother woke
him up at 1 a.m. saying, “Come
get your baby,” and as if that
weren’t bad enough the doll
was yowling again at 5 a.m.
Because they were supposed to
keep their dolls with them all the
time, Amy Shelton took hers to
the mall and the movies but
she admits that it was in a closed
book bag the whole time.
Home Economics teacher
Lashonda Adams, who planned
the lesson as an experience in the
responsibilities of baby sitting,
added with a smile that she nad

The dolls,’ on loan to the
school from the Perry Hospital
where they are used in parenting
classes, also teach young people
that the round-the-clock care of a
baby is a responsibility most teen
agers really don’t want or need.
Sure, they’re cute, and its fun
to give them names like
“Madison” and “McKenna,” but
the dolls are also programmed to
cry for as long as a half hour at a
time.
To hear them talk, most of the
students knew already that par

enthood is something for married
adults who already have their
educations and their place in the
work world, but the test in
patience was still a learning expe

Several of the girls, who had
the crying babies for a full week
end, just gave up and dismantled
the crying mechanism, and one
took the wailing doll back to her
teacher on Saturday.
The only student with no
complaints at all was Shane
Gunter, the soundest sleeper in
the bunch.
Maybe his baby cried. Maybe
it didn’t.
“I think it slept through the
night,” he reported. “I did.”
