Westfield roundup
Windsor eases by Hornets, 5-4
By PHIL CLARK
Tmes-Journai Sports
Chance Jones pitched well
enough to win here April 19,
but three Windsor pitchers
combined to limit Westfield to
just two hits over the first six
innings on the way to a 5-4
victory.
All five runs charged to
Jones were unearned, and the
freshman right hander struck
out 12 Windsor batters.
The Westfield bats were
silent after Kory Kitchens’ sin
gle plated two runs in the sec
ond inning. Kitchens’ hit fol
lowed a single by Henry
Hunter and a Windsor error
on Nathan Skinner’s ground
ball to short.
The Hornets didn’t manage
another hit until the bottom of
Monroe captures cold, windy
doubleheader from Hornets
By PHIL CLARK
Times-Iqurnal Sports
The Monroe Academy
Mustangs used a strong pitch
ing performance by Kevin
Phillips in the first game then
scored five runs in the final
two innings to wipe out a
Westfield lead in capturing a
non-region doubleheader Apr
12 in Forsyth.
Westfield had a tough time
solving Phillips in the first
game, managing just two hits
off the tall right-hander in the
rule-shortened five inning
affair.
The Hornets took a 1-0
lead in the top of the first
when Will Sexton drew a one
out walk, stole second base and
scored on a single by Jared
Shell.
After Monroe tied the score
in their half of the inning at 1-
1, Westfield claimed another
short-lived lead when Chad
Ekey reached on an error, went
to second on a wild pitch by
Phillips, and scored on a single
by Kory Kitchens.
But that would be the
Hornets’ only lead of the game
as the Mustangs posted 10
runs in their half of the second
on the way to a 12-2 win.
Westfield managed just one
base runner over the final three
innings off Phillips as the
Mustangs improved to 12-5
for year as the Hornets
dropped to 3-11.
Game two looked to be a
different story as the Hornets
jumped on Monroe starter
Chris Freeman for five first
inning runs as Chad Ekey
delivered a two-run single
then Chance Jones, Daniel
Weir and Golden Goss each
drove in a run as Westfield
took a 5-0 lead.
After Monroe got two in
the first on Derek Horne’s
two-run homer, the Hornets
Hornets split tennis match with Cavs

The Westfield Lady
Hornets tennis team took a
3-2 win over Mount de Sales
April 13 at the Cavaliers’
Mike Garvin sports complex.
Mount de Sales’ Kristen
Williamson took a 7-5, 6-2
win over Westfield’s ailing
Lauren Causey in the number
one singles match, but
Westfield’s Stephanie
Thompson won 6-3, 6-3 over
Molly Hefner at number two.
The Lady Hornets’ Erin
Adkins made short work of
Katie Bentley in the number
thfee singles match, winning
in sets of 6-0, 6-0.
In doubles matches,
Westfield’s number one team
of Lina Arnold and Brandi
Bazemore dropped their
match 6-3, 7-5 to Shelby
Smith-Emily Smith.

the seventh inning. With
Windsor leading 5-2, Jones
drilled a one out single to cen
ter and advanced to second on
a wild pitch.
Jordan Holt drew a walk,
and both runners moved up a
base on a groundout by Daniel
Weir, who had walked his
three other plate appearances.
That set the stage for
Chuck Registers’ solid single
to right center, scoring both
runners to cut the Windsor
lead to one run. But the rally
fell a run short.

on Trevor Jones’ first home run
of the season and a single by
Ekev, his second of the game.
Monroe had closed the gap
to 5-4 with single runs in the
second and third, but another
five run inning put the
Hornets in command at 11-4
going into the bottom of the
fourth inning.
With one out, Trevor Jones
reached on a single, stole sec
ond and moved to third as
Ekey reached on an error.
Shell then drove in Jones with
his second RBI single of the
game, and Chance Jones and
Weir followed suit.
Matt Hardy drove in
another run on a grounder to
short before Garnto could get
the side out.
The Mustangs kept chip
!>ing away at the Westfield
eaa, though. With two in the
fourth and another in the fifth,
Monroe cut the Westfield lead
to 11-7.
With the Hornets’ bats
suddenly going as cold as the
weather, the Mustangs got
back into the game with a 3-
spot in the bottom of the sixty,
cutting the lead to 11-10, then
scored the winning runs in the
bottom of the seventh on three
straight walks and Freeman’s
two run single.
The loss went to Daniel
Weir in relief, evening his
record at 2-2 for the year.
Garnto was the winner for
Monroe, also in relief.
Ironically the game winning
hit was delivered by Freeman,
the starting pitcher, who was
chased from the mound by
Westfield’s early hitting hero
ics.
The Hornets play at
Windsor April 22, then close
out the regular season April 27
at Stratford.
Todd and Kristen Watson
defeated the Cavaliers’ Emily
Dessern-Sarah DeLoach 6-3,
7-5.
Mount De Sales won all
five boys’ matches with Jason
Glow winning 6-4, 6-0 over
Chad Bailey, John Tripp
beating Brad Barfield 6-2, 6-

number three singles match
from James Farmer 6-2, 6-2.
In boys' doubles matches,
the Cavaliers Stephano

Experts don’t agree on which turkey call is best
(EDffOR’S NOTE: This week
columnist John Trusscll takes a final
look at turkey hunting for 1999.
He’s got fishing on his mind since
the weather turned warm.)
Brad Harris is public relations
director for Lohman Game calls and
a real believer in turkey box calls. He
says he uses a box call for fully 85
percent of his turkey hunting, which
normally lasts five to six weeks each
spring and covers five or six different
states.
With that much time in turkey
woods, he’s learned the box call pro
duces more gobbling response from
toms than any other call he uses.
He thinks the primary reason for
this is his box call which is high
pitched, but is tuned to have ringing
or raspy notes too.
He believes that higher note calls
produce more game. His grandfather
convinced him of that years ago
when he handmade a box turkey call
for him that had a very high tone to
it.
A lot of people thought that call
was too high pitched, but Brad killed
a lot of toms with that box - call he
says.
The very best box calls, such as
those produced by Lohman, are
made from a single piece of wood,
have consistent size slots and side
walls, and are manufactured without
glue, which deadens the call’s tone.

The more you use a box call, the
better tone it produces because it
loosens up a bit, and becomes broken
in. It’s important to note, though
that not every box call should be
stroked the same way to produce the
best sounds.
Every call has to be worked just
right with different pressure and
technique to make it perform best.
Fairly new in the market are push
pull turkey calls but they are easy to
use and very effective, says David
Hale, part owner of Knight and Hale
Game Calls.
He says that fully 90 percent of
the turkeys he shoots and the birds
he calls in for other people, are taken
with a push, pull call. Over all his
years of hunting, that’s probably 50Q
different toms taken from all over
the country.
He’s comfortable using other
types of calls on the market, but for
him the push pull call offers the
most realistic sounding hen yelps
from 30 yards and beyond.
That's an important distance,

because once a tom steps inside 30
yards, almost no calling is done any
way and the bird is committed to a
hunter.
A lot of competent callers believe
the push pull call is a beginner type
device he says because it’s so easy to
use. He uses it because it sounds so
real to a tom at a long distance.
There’s a lot of talent to using a
push pull call the right way. He uses
