Body, Mind and Soul
Body, Mind and Soul is a new column here at Flagpole designed to inform you of the
various lectures, classes, cultural events, meetings, support groups, etc. going on in the
Athens/Clarke County area. If your group has something going on they think people should

BODY
Classes/Workshops:
A Self Defense Course will be offered Oct.
2,9,16,23 by the Rape Crisis Center of NE
Georgia. No experience is necessary and
women of all abilities are welcome. No fee
is required, but any and all donations would
be greatly appreciated. Call 353*7844 for
more information.
The National Dance Assoc, and Ametuer
Ballroom Dancers Assoc, will be sponsor
ing a Ballroom dance workshop for school
and college teachers on Oct. 20. Registra
tion is $40, and the workshop will begin at
11 00 am in the P.E. building.
Trips:
GORP is sponsoring UGA Ski Week ’91 in
Breckenridge, CO The date of the trip is
Dec. 7-13. and the cost ranges from $300-
$550 ($280 - $530 if you're a UGA student)
depending on what travel package you
choose. Balances are due Oct. 28 at 4:00

MIND
Classes/Workshops:
The Lyndon House Art Center is offering a
stained glass workshop for adults on Satur
day, Nov. 23 from 10:00 am - 4:00 pm. The
workshop will focus on basic and advanced
design for stained glass, with emphasis on
technical requirements for large panels.
The intructor for the workshop is Brenda
Sloan, and the application fee is $15.
Registration for the class will continue until
the date of the class, or until the class if full.

The Outdoor Activities Division of the Athens-
Clarke County Department of Arts and
Environmental Education is sponsoring a
pumpkin carving workshop for kids 12 and
under. The workshop will be held on Oct. 26
from 10 am to 12 noon and children 8 and
under need to be accompanied by an adult.
Normal park fees apply, as well as a $2
charge for materials and a “pumpkin supr-
ise". Registration deadline is Oct. 24. For

Lectures:
The State Botanical Garden of Georgia is
sponsoring a free series of classes and
lectures designed for the general public
Dr. Alan Armitage of the horticulture depart
ment will have a slide presentation of the
gardens of Ireland on Oct. 24. All botany
lectures will have wine and cheese recep
tions at which the public will have the oppor
tunity to ask questions. Call 542-1244 for

The UGA Office for Instructional Develop
ment is hosting a seminar on “Developing
Reasoning Skills Through Concept Map
ping and Problem Solving Excercises on
Oct. 16. The session will start at noon in the
Instructional Plaza (P/J complex). The
speaker is Dr. Tom Hagen of the University
microbiology department. For more infor

The University will be hosting a Southern
Studies Lecture on Oct 16 entitled “One
Land, Many Voices: Georgia Writers and
Their Traditions". The speaker is Hugh
Ruppersburg of the English department
and the talk will begin at 4:30 pm in the
chapel.
Dr. Raymond McNalley, World Famous
Dracula expert and author of In Search of
Dracula, will be speaking at 8:30 pm in the
Tate Student Center on Tuesday, Oct. 22.Dr.
McNaley will be showing rarely-seen foot
age of vampire movies and interviews as
well as discussing vampire folklore.
Miscellaneous:
Murder, Madness — Macbeth is a special
adult program sponsored by Athens Re
gional Library during the month of Oct
Activities include an essay contest for adults
and high school students, a take-home
quiz, and a Halloween party at which par
ticipants will put together a “Public Reader's
Theater" performance of Macbeth. Infor

Oct. 25 at the library front desk, For more

SOUL
Music:
In continued celebration of the Mozart Bi
centennial, the UGA School of Music will be
presenting a Mozart Gala Concert in the
University Chapel Oct. 17. The concerts are
free and open to the public. For more

Theater:
The Town and Gown Players will be per
forming the Neil Simon comedy Rumors
Oct. 17-20. Showtimes are 8:15 pm Thurs
day - Saturday and 2:15 Sunday at the
Athens Community Theater. For ticket in

Miscellaneous:
The annual Golden Ginkgo Jamboree will
run Oct. 18 - 19 on College Square. Fea
tured will be arts and crafts exhibits, live
entertainment, and an annual Chili Cook
off. For information on entering a team for

The annual Watkmsville Fall Festival will be
held on Oct. 18. from 9:30 am - 4:00 pm. off
Mam Street. Arts and crafts, live entertain
ment, a 5K race, food vendors, as well as
games and events for kids will all be fea
tured.
The Madison-Morgan Cultural Center is
hosting a Performing Arts Festival Oct. 14 -
17. Admission is $3 for general public and
