They left
out taxes...
Okay, picture this: you have a lead singer who is reportedly homeless and
never bathes, three equally talented musicians backing him up, and a bidding
war over them by record companies like you wouldn’t believe.
That, my friends, is Life, Sex and Death in a nutshell.
Yes, they are emerging from the L.A. club scene, but don’t worry; this is not
another Motley Crue The singer, Stanley (no last name, please), looks like
Elvis Costello and wanders around in a world of his own. The music generated
by him and his bandmates is sometimes vulgar, sometimes thought-provok
ing, but always attention-getting.
Life, Sex & Death was finally signed by Warner Brothers Records after a
bidding war to end all bidding wars, and cr-tics have bent over backwards to
praise them, labelling them as the next big thing to come out of the City of
Angels.
The band will be at at the 40 Watt on Friday, November 29, and hopefully
the place will still be standing when the show is finished. Their live shows are
said to be one of the wildest, most intense experiences you could ever hope
to have, and their shows at the Whiskey A Go Go & other popular L A. clubs
have been selling out as soon as they’ve been announced. This surely is a
clear sign that Life, Sex & Death would be worth your money — how can all
those record companies, critics, and (most importantly) growing fan following
be wrong? „ L . w

A Letter to
Dear Sirs: .
Having lived in many university towns in the
past ten years, I have a broad prospective o
attitudes in college towns, and in most towns,
officials bend over backwards to protect the safety
and lives of their students.
Recently, I moved to Athens, and have ob
served a prevalent "them and us mind-set be
tween officials in charge, and the students, dem
onstrated by a "passive neglect", and some say
“criminal neglect" by officials regarding safety for
students.
Athens officials for reasons known only to
themselves choose to demonstrate by their ac
tions, that the 30,000 students "the majority con
tributors to the Athens economy", are not impor
tant enough to be protected by introducing bike
lanes, or enforcing pedestrian safety laws in the
community.
this perverse mindset spawns an appalling
insensitivity among the drivers in Athens! M>
observation is that drivers here rationalize that
since they're in a 5,000 lb. car, and since the laws
are not enforced, it must be OK to brush-back
bike riders, ignore loggers, and challenge pedes
trians with the right of way in crosswalks. This
"them and us" mind-set that I’ve witnessed is

unique to Athens and surely will cause many
innocent people to be maimed and killed in the
streets.
In most college towns, bike lanes are the rule,
not the exception! The University of Florida, for
example, has wide bike lanes on both sides of the
street, in-town and on campus. Does this mean
that the officials in Gainesville regard safety of
students as a high priority, you bet they do. Did
they consider the “budget busting” legal and
ethical risk versus the reward to their community,
what do you think?
If a parent of an injured UGA student were
inclined to pursue the theory of laws that hold
manufactures responsible for the negligence of
their product, an extension of that logic applies to
"officials that are negligent by not providing safe
passage for students." My opinion is that negli
gent Athens or UGA officials contributing to the
maiming or killing of pedestrians or bikers should
be vigorously pursued in court “as individuals’"
This action will surely send a message for change
to any individual official who has too long ignored
their responsibility to provide safe passage for
pedestrian, and bike riding students.
Sincerely,

Sommerville And Phillips (up from Atlanta) team up with Donna The Buffalo (presumably no! from
Buffalo) at The Downstairs on Sunday, December 1. This is (as usual) an all-ages, no-alcohol show,
so all y'all can come instead of having to stay outstairs on the side. That’s wrong, isn't it? Well,
Sommerville And Phillips are an acoustic duo who are not reminiscent of Black Sabbath; we don't know
anything about Donna except that she isn't a Prima Donna... that concept went out with Dion back in
1962, and most of you weren’t even born yet then Come and have a good quiet time, enjoy some food-
and-beverage-stuff, and be glad to be alive.
