Gallimaufry (means... a hodge-podge
of everything)
Here's a little fid-bit—Steve Riskin from
Meltdown Records said there's a band in L.
A. called Dashboard Prophets. The Saviors
will have their next album, love sorrow ha
tred madness, out March 14.
End of an era
David Ferguson, singer for The Go Fig
ures, called with the word — The Go Fig
ures have broken up. "We were touring and
it was going well but we weren't writing and
I think creatively — as we were vital as a
performance — I think creatively we had
come to an impasse," he told me over the
phone. "We were just parting ways." He
wasn't sure what his bandmates, Ted
Grauch, Scott Nutt and Pete Slife, will be
doing. David isn't giving up music, though.
'I'm definitely going to keep making music,
and I'm working with the bass player from
Bug Hummer — Jacque Lyons. I'm looking
for a guitarist," he added.
Ballard’s on the
Honey Wagon
Ballard Lesseman from The Germans
called to impart the following information:
The Germans will perform at the Atomic
Music Hall Jan. 28. They'll be releasing a
single, 'Genius' b/w Tattoo of Sorts," re
corded at Andy Baker's Rockcentral Studio
and they'll have some with them at the
show. They're also playing at Frijoleros Feb.
8 and will have a nine-song cassette filled
with live and studio material available to the
eager public.
Opening for The Germans at the Atomic
on the 28th is Honey Wagon, a band from
Charleston, S. C. The band features Glen
) .orres on bass and vocals, Peter Alvanos on
drums and vocals, and James Mdnney on
guitar and vocals. Ballard used to play with
Glen in a band called The Islands and The
Nabors (they loved Jim Nabors...) and he
played with Peter in a band called Good Sam
Disco down
The 40 Watt CJub will be holding a couple
of specialty discos this week, beginning with
'Abduction' — an AIDS Athens Dance
Party. Abduction will commence at 10 p.m.
and go to 6 a.m. The all-night RAVE will fea
ture many circuit DJs.
Also, Billy Taylor moved his downtown
hiphop clothing store, Coolies, to a new lo
cation on 228 W. Hancock St. The new name
is Pie. He'll hold a fashion show Jan. 30 be
ginning at 11 p.m. featuring the fashions of
X/Girl, Mondorama, Poot, Pervert, Maple,
Alien Workshop and Acme Skate among oth
ers. There will probably be around 15 mod
els. The fashions range from skate wear to
urban street wear to dub dothes. Cost for this
disco is only $2.
Upcoming shows
Here are a few upcoming shows that I
wish we had more room in the paper to write
about.
Jonathan Rlchman—Well, we've inter
viewed Jonathan just about every time he's
come to town. He's a charmer and we can't
resist the opportunity to talk to him prior to
his arrival. But here's the way it's usually done:
Rounder Records, Jonathan's label, lets him
know we want to interview him. He takes the
phone number and when he has a chance,
he'll call. Well, sometimes he calls when no
one is around, and that's what happened this
time. A true delight! Hell be at the 40 Watt
with Lisa Majersky Thursday, Jan. 26.
Dolce Sudore, Italian for Sweet Sweat, will
perform at the Gty Bar Jan. 26, Thursday night.
The band features Dana Downs on vocals,
Doug Stanley on guitar, Tim Adams (Snail) on
bass and Pat Patterson (Hillbilly Frankenstein)
on drums. The band plays old jazz standards
and... here's a twist... James Bond tunes (!)
with an occasional Spinal Tap number.
Just who is the Dude of Life anyway?
Based in New York Gty, he's a songwriting
enigma known for wild costumes and his
occasional appearances on stage, unan
nounced, at Phish shows. He has a debut
album out on Elektra Records entitled Crimes
of the Mind featuring Phish as his backup
band. Hell be performing at the Georgia The
atre Jan. 25.
Bloodline—here's the genealogy: Berry
Oakley Jr. (son of Berry Oakley, Allman Broth
ers bassist), Erin Davis (son of Miles Davis)
plays drums and Waylon Krieger (son of
Robbie Krieger of the Doors) plays guitar. Add
to that blend a 17-year-old guitarist, 'Smokin''
Joe Bonamassa and keyboardist Lou Segreti.
The band plays (what else?) Southern blues/
rock and that jazz thing. They'll be playing at
the Georgia Theatre Tuesday, Jan. 31.
That Time of Year
Again - SXSW
We're doing our band directory again,
so if you're a new band and/or were not in
cluded in last year's directory, call Hillary at
706-549-9523 ASAP!
As a sponsoring paper for SXSW we get
to sponsor a band for a showcase. Well, this
year we're going all out and through the dili
gent efforts of our publisher, Monsieur Den
nis Greenia, we'll be sponsoring the entire
Jesus Christ Superstar: A Resurrection
project! The show, featuring the Indigo Girls,
Michael Lorant with Big Fish Ensemble, and
many other Atlanta/Athens musicians and
bands (looks like Five-Eight will be going too!)
will take place March 19, Sunday night, at the
Paramount Theatre on 6th Avenue in Austin.
