The Adventures of Pinocchio (G)
r nis live-action version of the Pinocchio
story, though chock tun of digital effects,
•jst can’t live up to the classic Disney
artoon. Its slow pace and weak support-
no cast will bore the pants off of anyone
over 5 — which would De a really baa
thing, seeing as you'd be half naked in a
-eater full of young cniidren Avoid the
emoarrassment ana dont attenc
(Beecnwcooi
The Cable Guy (PG-13) Those of you
expecting to see Jim Carrey talking out of
his rear end will be sorely disappointed
with this film. But if Ace Ventura is your
idea ol high comedy, you should probably
start getting used to disappointment. In
The Cable Guy, director Ben Stiller reveals
the darker sioe of Carrey's humor. The
laughs are there, but trey arent spoon
fed to you. IDs a nice change. (Alps)
Chain Reaction (PG-13) Keanu
Reeves stars as a scientist who discov
ers a way to turn water into a powerful
energy force. If he can do that, why cant
he turn himself mto a better actor? Mor
gan Freeman costars in this action-sus
pense movie that will certainly raise the
question, 'How did Keanu Reeves get
cast as a smart scientist guy?" (Mall In-
Side)
Courage Under Fire (R) Finally, a sum
mer film ihat delivers moie than just spe
cial effects. Denzel Washington stars as
an army officer in searcn of the truth about
Meg Ryan's heroic deeds in the Gulf War
This film is -veil-written, well-cast and re
news myfaith in Hollywood^ ability to pro-
ouce gooo stuff. Highly recommendeo.
and you know how picky I am. (Mai In
side)
Dragonheart (PG-13) Dennis Quad
and Sean Connery star - this ridiculous
fable about a knight and his reiationshic
with the Iasi dragon on earth. Sean put a
lot into this role. He must have gaineo at
least 400 oounds, ana that plastic dragon
costume must have been really hot to
wear on the set all day. Dennis Quaid also
worked hard to make his accent as non
descript as possible. I think this tilm was
set in Scotland, or was it England, or
maybe Beverty Hills. It depends on which
of the actors is speaking. This film is a
two-hour action figure commercial. The
kiddies might enjoy it, but I’ll het they it
create a better story line when they're play
ing with their new Bowen the Knight ana
Draco the Dragon dolls at home. (Alps)
EriM. (R) The comedy hit of the sum
mer! There's just one problem This is sup
posed to be an action film. But while
watching Arnold wrestle animatronic alli
gators, utter lines like' bu're luggage.'
and leap out of a plane bu» somehow
catch a tailing parachute, I couldnt help
but laugh. Bad. Bad. Bad. Trust me. There
is nothing new to see here. Please move
on. (Mall Inside, then Mall Outside)
Fled (R) Steven Baldwin and Laurence
Fishbume are iwo convicts on the tun from
the Cuban mafia in the latest from direc
tor Kevin Hooks. Ift your typical shoot-
’em-up buddy flick, with very few sur
prises If you aren't as bumi out on this
kind of movie as I am, you may find it en
tertaining. (Mall Outside)
Tli* Frightener* (R) When a psychotic
mass murderer returns from the grave, its
up to Michael J. Fox to rid the world of the
evil undead. Fortunately, he’s armed with
the ability to see ghosts, as well as a fop
new Matthew Perryish haircut. Director
Peter Jackson utilizes state-of-the-art spe
cial effects and keen camera work to bring
us a not-so-scary, but certainly entertain
ing. film. Siskei ana Ebert didn't like it. but
•hen again, they thought 'Eraser was a
great movie. (Beechwood)
Harriet the Spy (PG) This story about
one sixtn grader’s trials and tribulations
had me yearning for the days when my
sister ana i would preter.a we were in an
■ce sxating rock and roll band that cwnea
a cnocolate factory, a radio station and a
cnerristry lab. Plus. :t portrays youtnfui
curiosity in a much more positive way
than, say, 'Kids.' (Mall Inside)
Homeward Bound 2 (G) Two dog-
friends and a cat-fnend get lost in Ss'
Francisco. (Alps)
Hunchback oVSotre Dame (G) More
‘Secret of NIMH' than "Snow White,’ the
latest Disney animated feature is almost
too dee? for the kids. The novel fron
which it was adapted wasnt exactly light
reading. But an excellent musical score
and fabulous animation will make the story
of Quasimodo, an unlikely Disney hero,
the Happy Meal movie of the summer
(Beechwood)
I Shot Andy Warhol (R) Lili Taylor stars
as the woman who spent her 15 minutes
of fame trying to murder art great Andy
Wathoi. As I always say, support indepen
dent film, especially when ills this dam
good. (Georgia Theatre)
Indopor.donco Day (PG-13) Bill Pull
man is Luke Skywalker. Will Smith is Han
Solo. I guess that makes Je? Goldblum
Chewbacca. The plot of this alien inva
sion film is as hokev as they get, but pro
vides enough action, suspense and good
clean fun to keep iilmgoers satisfied until
George Lucas gets off his butt and con
tinues the Star Wars saga. (Beecnwooo)
Joe’s Apartment (PG-13) I really con 1

Kazaam (PG) Would someone please
stop the madness? No more sports or
music celebrities crossing over to the
movie business. I mean it OK. maybe
Madonna, but 'hats n. I'm senous.
(Beechwood)
Kingpin (PG-13) Woocy Harreison, 51
Murray and Randy Guam star in this film
about a rubber-hanoea Dowter ana tvs
Amisn friena's quest to win a big-time
bowing tournament Brought to you by the
same guys who mace Dump ana
Dumber.' If you liked that one. you II like
this one even more. It's good clean fun
for anyone not citendea by gratuitous
vomiting scenes ana jokes about bull se
men. (Beechwood)
Matilda (PG) Danny DeVito directs this
fiim adaptation of the children's book of
the same name. The previews give me a
good feeling about this story about a little
girl's paranormal powers. Looks like it
should be fun for kids and auults alike.
(Beechwood)
Muitv&city (PG-13) From the director
of ‘Groundhog Day" comes this comedy
about a man who clones himsetf to make
time for the important things in life.
’Groundhog Day" rose above its simple
storyline, but ’MuKipiicity’ never gets past
its too-limited premise. Michael KeatonS
three clones are very funny, and he does
find himself in some pretty hilarious pre
dicaments, but the humor starts to wear
thin after an oeyr ana a '■ait Reccro-
menaea but at matinee prices

Meryl Streep and Robert Redtoro. won
critical acclaim, not to mention Acaoemy
Awards, when it was released several
years age Donl miss the chance to see
its magnificent cmematograpny on the big
screen. (Tate)
Phat Baach (R) Not a whole lot of buzz
around mis film. I'm going to venture a
guess that it isn't the sequel to ’Heavy
weights.’ (Mai! Inside)
Phancmanon (PG) Explosions, strip
shows and jokes about bodily functions
seem to define this summer's crop of
blockbusters, but If you're looiung for that
feel-good, heartwarming movie treat, mis
is the one. Granted. Travolta never dances
the Texas Two-step with a beer m ms back
pocket, but he still nas that leaorog man
charm. (Beechwooo)
The Rock (R) Nicolas Cage is Stanley
Goodspeed, a cfiemical ’superfreak’ re
sponsible for saving 81 hostages and
possibly the entire city cf San Fiancisco
from a very upset Ec Hams. Sean Connery

Supercop (R) Arnold. Tom, even the tor
nadoes in Twister wisn they could be half
as cooi as Jackie Chan. Sure the plot's
thinner than Woooy Harrelson's hair in
’Kingpin,’ but who cares? Jackie Chan's

A Time to Kill (R) Vatthex
McConnaugney, Sanora Bullock ana
Samuei L Jackscn star in roe .atest fitrr
aoaptanor, of a John Grisham nove 1
McConnaugney piays a lawyer oeteno-
mg a Dlack man accused ot murdering
the two white men who rapeo his Daugh
ter. This film is superior to an other at
tempts to Dnng Gnsnam novels tc the
screen. Akiva Goldmans senpt. like the
novel, is brutally honest about the exist
ence cf racism in the modern-day South.
Unlike many of this summer's films, this
movie really gives you something to think
about when you leave the theater.
(Beechwood)
ItoisUr (PG-13) Its predictable. It has
one too many colorful characters. Its ro
mantic sub-plot gets a bttie boring. But
sometimes donl you just want to veg out
in front of the big suooii and be amazed
by special effects and clever cinematog
raphy? If not, this film, about a group of
tornado chasers, is no! for you. This is
summer biockHster candy. Its a tasty
treat but doesnl have a whole lot of sub
stance. (Beechwood)
