Normaltown Flyers,
Stolen Bones
One Love Music & Dance Hall
One of the increasingly rare chances to hear
the Normaltown Flyers in Athens with an All-
Star comes this weekend. Brian Burke has been
spending a lot of time in Nashville writing
songs, and other Flyers are involved in other
projects (Andy Carlson is teaching in Ohio), so
they just don't all get together that much. At
the One Love, the lineup will be Brian on gui
tars and vocals, Pearce Quinter on drums, Tom
Ryan on bass and vocals, THE Davis Causey on
guitar and vocals, Andy Carlson on fiddle,
guitar and vocals and Earl Murphy on fiddle. The Flyers will play some of their traditional stuff
and a lot of songs Brian has recently written. At 11 p.m., the Flyers will morph into the Stolen
Bones and play a set of Rolling Stones covers.
"We get to do our own thing and then cut loose and have some fun," Brian says.
What kind of music is the Flyers' own thing? "We used to call our music 'pickup truck rock and
roll,'" Brian says, "but it's gotten more country since I've been in Nashville. But pickup truck rock
and roll is still a pretty good description." Music starts at 9:30 p.m. sharp. (Pete McCommons)

Jet By Day, Maserati
40 Watt Club
There is very little wrong with the Jet By
Day sound at the moment. The philosophy
behind the trio always seems to be "Keep
moving, keep doing it."
Guitarist David Matysiak and drummer Tom
Naumann have spent most of the year building
on the band's already solid foundation in the
Athens scene, gaining attention for its aggres
sive, guitar-heavy sound and emo-core lean
ings. The band released a limited-edition, self-
recorded album on disc titled Autumn Means It's All Downhill in 1998. A self-titled, four-song EP
followed in early '99. Both had a lot of the feel of early Hum, Fugazi and Pavement
According to Matysiak, the band is currently finishing its third proper release—a ten-song
collection tentatively titled Please Unring The Bell—with engineer Matt Goldman at Glow In The
Dark Studio in Atlanta.
"There'll be some different instrumentation, says the frontman. "There's a more 'space-rock'
influence, a wider range of musical elements, and Amy's singing more. Hopefully it will flow
