BIG MOMMA'S HOUSE (PG-13)
Marlin Lawrence goes “deep under
cover" in this crude comedy about a
slick city detective who poses as an
obese Georgia grandmother. As "Big
Momma." he kicks ass in karate class,
slam dunks on the basketball court,
boogies hard in church and delivers a
baby with unconventional methods.
This is a derivative comedy consisting
of little more than a continuous string of
gags and one-liners revolving around
the same joke, but audiences are
howling anyway. (Beechwood, Carmike.

CHICKEN RUN (3) This is the first
full-length feature from Britain’s
Aardman Ammation (“Wallace And
Gromit’), and it’s a wonderfully whim
sical effort like none seen before. Set in
England in the 1950s. this off-beat,
whimsical Claymation action-adventure
follows a pack of chickens desperate to
escape from the prison camp-like
Tweedy^ Farm. Ginger (voiced by Julia

solitary confinement. Then, Rocky the
Flying Rooster (voiced by Mel Gibson),
a cocky American bird, comes bouncing
into the yard and claims he can teach
the hens how to fly to freedom Weird
excitement packed witt. dry British
tumor and slang, some frightening
close-calls and a genuine sense ot
drama and urgency. Go see it
(Beechwood. Carmike)
DISNEY'S THE KID (PG) Director
John Turteltaub’s (Phenomenon) family
comedy is a warm, clever, and senti
mental offering that gets syrupy (thanks
especially to the obnoxious musical
cues), but stays on track Bruce Willis is
an arrogant L.A. image consultant who.
on the eve of his 40th birthday, gets to
meet himself as an 8-year-old kid. He
dismisses the phenomenon as an
oncoming nervous breakdown. The
pudgy kid. played with convincing
charm and wit by newcomer Spencer
Breslin. can't understand why he's been
transplanted to his future, either. The
two develop a decent rapport, however,
and Willis' cold heart inevitably thaws.
Look for wonderful performances from
British actress Emily Mortimer and the
great comedienne Lily Tomlin.

’in' and sparks a murderous series of
sneaky, retaliatory events. (Beechwood,

LOSER (PG-13) See Movie Pick
(Beechwood, Carmike)
LOVE AND BASKETBALL (PG-13)
Director Gina Pnnce’s smart and warm
hearted romantic drama gets at more
than just college hoop dreams; it fol
lows two childhood friends, Monica
(Sanaa Lathan) and Quincy (Omar
Epps), as they grow up and into a com
plicated relationship in which basketball
becomes a catalyst. (Mall)
ME, MYSELF & IRENE (PG-13) A
vulgar and uncharacteristically unfunny
comedy from the Farrelly Brothers
(There's Someihing About Mary.
Kingpin, Dumb & Dumber). Jim Carrey
sutlers an extremely weird split person
ality disorder in his role as Charlie, a
mce-guy cop living in Rhode islanda
town where everybody—except lor his
three sons—constantly walks all over
him. He's the joke o! the town.. until
one day when he totally loses it and
becomes ’Hank," a completely unlik-
able. overly aggressive, sexist menace.
Renee zellweger (Jerry Maguire) pouts
her way through a rather drab perfor
mance as the love interest. Like Mary
and Kingpin before, the story basically
follows its characters along a wild road
trip filled with setups, punchlines and
pratfalls. If doesn't work so well this
time, unfortunately. With Chris Cooper.
Robert Forster, Richard Jenkins and
Little Tony Cox. Ends Thursday.
(Beechwood. Carmike)
MOUSE HUNT (PG) Nathan Lane and
Lee Evens engage in a battle of wills

NUTTY PROFESSOR II: THE
KLUMPS (PG-13) Comedian Eddie
Murphy reprises his roles as the entire
Klump clan and the despicable Buddy
Love, first showcased in The Nutty
Professor, in this *gut-busting" sequel
in which Professor Klump travels to the
White House. With Janet Jackson and
Larry Miller. Opens Friday. (Beechwood,
Carmike, Commerce Drive-In)
THE PATRIOT (R) Director Roland
Emmerich’s sentimental Revolutionary
War epic is filled with strong perfor
mances. expansive, scenic photog
raphy; a handful of realistically brutal
and disturbing battle scenes, and barrel
fuls of sap. At times moving and com
plicated, the film assumes its audience
has already brushed up heavily on its
Colonial history and bounces from one
scenario to another without thoroughly
setting up any of them. Mel Gibson's
elective performance as a South
Carolina farmer who resists the call to
arms propels the film, but some scenes
are so poorly written, it’s hard not to
laugh. Heath Ledger stands out as the
rebellious eldest son determined to fight
for the cause. English actors Jason
Isaacs and Tom Wilkinson steal the
screen as conniving British officers.
Meta Thompson is an extra.
(Beechwood. Carmike)
THE PERFECT STORM (PG-13) A
salty tragedy, directed with a heavy hand
by Wolfgang Petersen (Air Force One,
Das Boot) from Sebastian Junger's best
selling book (based on true events).
Drenched in sea water, fish guts, a
relentless score of overly-dramatic sym
phonic music and a few magnificent
performances, the epic follows a group
of grizzled Massachusetts fishermen
aboard the boat Andrea Gail as they
attempt to haul in the molherload catch
during a monstrous "storm of the cen
tury." The story, set in the fishing town
of Gloucester in 1991, gradually intro
duces a handful of characters struggling
to make life work, be it on the sea or on
land. As the boat's serious-minded,
determined skipper, George Clooney
clocks in a strong performance, con
veying a complicated blend of heroism,
romanticism, greed and desperation.
Mary Elizabeth Maslrantonio (Limbo),
Mark Wahlberg. Diane L3ne, William
Fichlner and John C Reilly deliver
some fine support performances as
well. Unfortunately, much of what
should have been climactic moments in
the final acts gets bogged by the choppy
story and drawn-out storm scenes pro
pelled by special effects. Still, there’s
enough realism and intensity in the
depiction of this tragic story to stir audi
ences. Check it out. (Beechwood,
Carmike, Commerce Drive-In)
POKEMON: THE MOVIE 2000 (G)
First off. if you are not familiar with the
Pokemon universe, then basically
Pok6mon are animals that trainers cap
ture and battle for points and badges in
the popular kids' TV series and trading
card game. I liked thir movie, aside
from small children yelling ’Pikachu’
in the movie theater. The main thing I
liked was that this movie was not as
cheesy as the first Pok&non movie. So
if you have a couple of bucks to blow,
go and see a matinee, because it is sur
prisingly funny. [Alex Moore]
(Beechwood, Carmike)
RETURN TO KE (PG) A surprisingly
touching and bittersweet romantic
drama filled with effective tidbits ot
hilarity from first-time screenwriter and
director Bonnie Hum. Starring David
Duchovny, Minnie Driver and Carroll
O'Connor (Mall)
ROAD TRIP (R) Comedian Tom Green
of MTV fame narrates this banal romp
tnat was filmed partially in and around
Athens and on the UGA campus. Starts
Friday. (Mall)
SCARY MOVIE (R) Directing from a
weird script written by Shawn Wayans,
Marlon Wayans. and others, Keenen
Ivory Wayans (’In Living Color’) has
assembled one of the most over-the-top
disgusting comedies ol the year. This
movie skewers scenes Irom Scream, I
Know What You Did Last Summer, and
Urban Legend (as well as a few clever
’surprise’ movies) and makes a satirical
attack on some of the catch-phrases and
cliches produced recently by American
cinema. Mosl of the comedy is raucous,
nasty and hit-or-miss, but the "gross-
out humor’ surpasses that of American
Pie, There's Something About Mary and
the recent Me, Myself & Irene.
(Beechwood, Carmike. Commerce
Drive-In)
SHAFT (R) Samuel L. Jackson is a
tough, smart-mouthed New York detec
live in director John Singleton's stylish
update on the 1971 “blaxploitation"
classic. The film maintains a cool, gritty
style similar to the original and touches
on serious social issues but almost
loses its balance along the way and
almost stumbles over its numerous
implausibilities and violence. With
Christian Bale. Jeffrey Wright, Toni
Collette, Busta Rhymes, Vanessa
Williams, and Dan Hedaya Featuring
music from Isaac Hayes (Georgia
Theatre)
SCHINDLER’S LIST (R) 1993. Steven
Speilberg's Academy Award-winning,

ular TV series) and Mara Wilson.
