Rootsy, rocking band with a
singer/songwriter focus.
SOUP (40 Watt) The Atlanta-based,
vocal-heavy, groove-pop quintet
recently celebrated the release of its
two-disc live album A Tour Of Two
Cities (Phoenix Presents), a 21 -song
collection recorded in Atlanta and New
York.
SUPERNOWAKS (Above) Jazz stan
dards and originals. 7-9 p.m.
THE UNION (Caledonia) Atlanta pop
rock quartet with a focus on smart
melodies. They've been at it a while and
have appeared on several Ghostmeat
compilations.
ViViSPECTRA (Tasty World) Fronted
by local composer-musician Charles
Names, this experimental local project
has enlisted the help of additional
vocalists, players and philosophers *o
help deliver the various sound
sources—whether electronic or other
wise. This is the band's final show."

guitar distortion and drum beats. This
beer’n'steak-crazed Athens band is
always a challenging “love 'em or hate
'em" affair."
DJ SUPRFLYY (AMF) A dance night
filled with oid-school disco faves.
D.M.C.B (One Love) Dave Matthews
cover band, hence the initials. Hey. at
least they're honest.
ENTROPY (Georgia Bar) Local jam
band. Groovy.
FIELD TRIP (DCs) From Auburn, AL.
plays a reportedly kickin’ mixture of
classic rock covers with a few more
contemporary tunes and originals.
Playing with Winslow Willard and
Lunarleaf.
JACKPOT CITY (Tasty World) This all
female pop-rock band is garnering more
and more attention as of late with its
nifty tunes about broken hearts and
mean-spirited crushes. Expect slick har
monies and lovely melodies.
JETSTAR 7 (Tasty World) Nifty pop
rock from Birmingham. See p. 23 for
more.
TAYLOR JOINER (Caledonia) The tal
ented frontman for Cafeteria does the
solo singer/songwriter thing tonight.
“LEC TRICK LOUNGE"
(Boneshakers) Dance night starting at
midnight after the cabaret act.
COLIN MCKAY (Above) Local
singer/songwriter type guy. Last time,
he was by himself. This time, he may
have a band with him. Who knows? Isn't
live music fun?
THE NECTARINES (Georgia Theatre)
Rockin’ trio featuring Barry Sell, John
Mills and Aaron Phillips. Mostly origi
nals with more rock and less twang than
Sell’s previous work Opening for the
Mike Willis Band.
JASON POWER (Chip's) Acoustic gui
tarist and singer playing old favorites
and requests.
“100% PRODUCTIONS PRE
SENTS” (Mean Mike*) “Hype
Thursday" includes house and trance.

hosted by the “one-man band" featuring
a collaboration between Radix and Colin
McKay with guest DJ Rayker and DJ
Lokee spinning “intelligent drum 'n‘
bass’ starting at 9:30 p.m
SHANK (Georgia Theatre) This six-
piece bluegrass outfit calls itself
“Classic City Cosmic Grass’ music,
mixing banjos and mandolins with rock
and folk touches with the merest hint of
funk. Think Leftover Salmon. Playing
with the Nectarines and the Mike Willis
Band.
S.M.C. (40 Watt) Hard-rockin', name-
takin’ quartet that mixes a metallic
crunch with a slick funk groove.
SALTGRASS (Caledonia) You’re guess
is as good dS mine. Check 'em out and
surprise us both.
WINSLOW WILLARD AND
LUNARLEAF (DTs) This young local
quintet performs pop-rock originals with
touches of jazz-blues style improvisa
tion. They're planning on hitting the
studio in September.
MIKE WILUS BAND (Georgia
Theatre) This Atlanta outfit plays
acoustic-based Southern Rock that falls
somewhere between the Eagles and Lyle
Lovett. Playing with Shank and the
Nectarines.
WINTER'S HAVEN (Tasty Wodd)
Young local band playing melodic indie
pop with a oddly Southern twist.

angst-tilled nervous energy. Recently

Southern rock/jazz outfit Sea Level
(which featured members of the Allman
Brothers) plays a stripped-down but
nonetheless very funky blend of
Southern soul and roadhouse rock.
CONFLICT OF INTEREST (DTs) With

dance night starling at midnight.

FLO (AMF) ‘Frat rock" in the most lit
eral sense of the word, this Greek-
spawned outfit covers tunes by Phish
and Widespread Panic. Seriously.
HANNAWARD PASS (AMF) Original,
straight-forward, good-time rock and
roll. The kids dig it.
KIT HOLMES (Garden Room Cafe)
Singer/songwriter at the lower level of
the conservatory at the State Botanical

JERRY JOSEPH & THE JACKMOR-
MANS (AMF) Hard-rockin’ power pop
from the Great Northwest. See more on

LESLIE BERRY BAND (Above) Folk-
rock from Spartanburg, SC.
MATH (Engine Room) Formerly of
Baton Rouge, LA. this quintet now calls
Athens home. They call their music
‘sonic space rock." Part of the "First
Annual Washington Street Festival." see
p. 12 for more.
MIDNIGHT CARAVAN (Allen’s) This
newly-established rock band from
Dalonega, GA. describes its sounds as a
“melodic-classical-progressive alterna
tive to the alternative." Expect a mix of
classic pop songcraft, some Pink Floyd-
inspired weirdness and the like. The
new CD is titled The Way It Should Be
“NEIL YOUNG TRIBUTE” (40 Watt)
This tribute to the sideburned song
writer is part of the big “Washington
Street Festival’ (see “Business’ on p.
22). Featuring The Modfathers, Mike
Mantione (Five-Eight), Patterson Hood
(Drive-By Truckers), Clay Leverett
(Lona. The Lures) the 8-Track Gorilla,
Southern Bitch and others. Music starts

“ROCK ART" (Lyndon House Arts
Center) To close out the exhibit's run,
the artsy types are letting some bands
play a free show The Flicke; Orchestra
kicks it off at 5.30 p.m., followed by
Synchilla at 6:15 p.m. and Lona at 7:15
p.m.
“TITO PUENTE TRIBUTE" (Tasty
World) To pay homage to the Latin jazz
master, there’s gonna be all kinds of
good stuff going on from catering by
Caliente Cab to a salsa/Latin dance con
test.
CARL WEATHERSBY (Chips)
Chicago blues guitar great and, oddly
enough, former football coach. Formerly
with harmonica maestro Billy Branch’s
Sons of the Blues. Weathersby s latest
record. Come to Papa, is on the
Evidence label.
“ZUPPORT” (Caledonia) Cooked up
by Radio:Tahiti's Steve Fitzpatrick as
“This-side-of-town-festival" as a part of
the “Washington Street Festival." DJs
will be kickin’ it in any style you might
could imagine. On the schedule of
goodies are a dunking booth and some
thing called “Celebrity Family Feud."
