PARAKEET NELSON (DPs) Local gui
tarist Chris Cates (AKA Mealtime
Brown) fronts this unpredictable rock
trio. The recent album is Mealtime
Brown Fresents... Parakeet Nelson
(Dust Bunny). The official ‘back in
town’ gig after the Phallic Phungus
bandls successful summer tour of East
Germany. F. Sprouts, Last Day Down,
Don’t Know, and Planet Jive.
NATHAN SHEPPARD (Boar's Head)
Sheppard is a veteran of the Athens
scene and is known for his emotive
singing style and his modem rework
ings of classic tunes.
UNDERSCORE (Lunch Paper) A
newly-formed, lo-fi indie rock band
based here of Athens. The polyrhythmic,
hard-driving songs on the demo sug
gests some hints of early Pixies.

Seam and other *90s underground
giants.

THE APOSTLES (One Love)
T raditional roots reggae. This eight-
piece ensemble recently relocated here
from Boone, NC. and concentrates on
Marley-esque, feel-good grooves. Lead
singer Peanut delivers the socially and
spiritually conscious lyrics with glee.
BRYAN STONE & BLAKE BRYANT
(Allents) Acoustic rock, folk and country
standards and originals.
COSMIC CHARLIE (Georgia Theatre)
An elaborate tribute to the Grateful Dead
featuring a slew of local players. (Look
for William: Tonks, too!) Two sets
starting at 1C p.m. See Box.
DAVE & THE WEIRD FACTOR (90.5
FM) This up-and-coming local band
plays an improv-heavy style of psyche
delic blues-rock in the vein of Stevie
Ray, Hendrix and the Meat Puppets.
Performing during WUOG's ever-
exciting ‘Live In The Lobby’ at 8 p.m.
DJ SUPRFLYY (AMF) A dance night
filled with funky, old-school disco faves.
ELI (40 Watt) Jokingly titled And/s
Ruining Everything (Polyglot Records),
this local soul-pop quartet’s recent
album is a gleaming collection of
soulful, energetic pop that reflects an
influence of both gospei and traditional
rock styles. It’s an upbeat album that
lyrically reflects vocalist David
Ferguson's own emotional triumphs of
late.
5 MORE DEAD (Tasty World) The
sharpest elements of ‘new rock’ and
modern heavy metal clash on this
Lilbum, GA bands forthcoming release.

JEftO (Tasty World) Punkish grind-core
rock from Pueblo. Colorado. This loud,
aggressive trio is touring behind a new
album titled Afterbirth (Bad People).

LEECH MILK (Tasty World) Extreme,
morbid grind-core metal stuff from
Atlanta. The recent six-song EP is titled
Worthless. This band's local shows have
become some of the most talked-about
underground gigs of the year.
OSTRICH (40 Watt) Pop-rock band
opening for Eli.
LUNAR LEAF (Nowhere Bar) A newly-
formed roots-rock band with jazz and
blues flavors fronted by singer-guitarist
Wesley Willard.
NATHAN BEAVER (DTS) Leslie
NielsonS character in 1988's Naked Gun
would have enjoyed this Athens singer-
guitarist's set of rock and roll covers and
whatnot.

SENTS" (Mean MikeS) ‘Hype
Thursday’ includes house and trance.

WEEDEATER (Tasty World) Formed in
‘96 in Wilmington, NC, this gruff and
rough rock trio plays a hard-hitting style
of Southern-style punk and nrunge
that’s grinding, dirty-sounding and
infectious. The brand new aibum is
called And Justice For )Tall( Berserker/
Game Two). Featuring former members
of Buzzoven.

EXPLOSION” (AMF) Featuring blues
vocalists Neal Pattman and Clarence
Cameron and various local hotshots out
of such bands as Park Bench Blues
Band, The Healers, Squat and other,.

ERECTOR SET (Engine Room) This
rock trio recently relocated from Tempe,
Arizona to Athens. The band plays a
heavy-handed blend of reverb-
drenched surf-rock and fractured and

STREET (Boar’s Head) This newly-
formed, Athens fou r -piece describes
itself as producing a “funky, psychedelic
porno groove.'
SCI-FU (Tasty World) This extremely
heavy-sounding local rock trio finished
recording eight songs in the studio
recently. Expect massive and complex
material ever reminiscent of Red -era
King Crimson, Melvins and early
Dinosaur Jr. tonight.
VIC VARNEY (Flicker) This Athens-
based singer-songwriter (ex-Method
Actors, Go Van Gogh) has long been an
integral part of the music scene. Hefs
been gigging around NYC lately and
plans to retease a follow-up to his
recent gem, One-One, this fall. 8:30
p.m.
“ACOUSTIC HAPPY HOUR"
(Caledonia) A hip. low-key event on the
outside deck featuring Louis Schefano,
Jeff Martin and other ‘surprises.’ 6

THE AZURE RAY (40 Watt) Also
known as ‘Orenda & Maria.’ The two
songbirds of Athens band Little R°d
Rocket open Team Clermont's Big
Weekend’ (see. p. 20) at 9:30 p.m.
BITCHIN’(Tasty World) A little bit of
post-punk mischief, a little bit of ‘90-
style alt-rock and a whole lot of positive
vibes. This rock trio hails from
Gainesville. FL. Featuring members of
Rumbleseat. The band is on its second
tour of the South behind a new T
record on the No Idea label.
CAFETERIA (Caledonia) Taylor Joiner
Four. Jesus Lizard, etc.). Bug ‘em for a
copy of the cool, lo-fi demo titled
Daybreak Revolt.
FIELD TRIP (DTS) This Auburn, AL
band plays a mix o', classic and con-
., temporary rock covers and originals.
FIVE-EIGHT (40 Waft) This highly-
complex Athens rock band—fronted by
guitar-wielding manic Mike
Mantione—came to power in the early-
1990s and established itself as the
astute and thunderous power-pop band
of the scene. Part of the Team
Clermont's Big Weekend’ bash (see. p.
20).
IDAHO (40 Watt) There’s plenty of
dark, atmospheric and melancholic ele
ments in the pop rock of this LA
bandls new self-released live disc,
People Like Us Should Be Stopped.

“INSPIRED MOVEMENT" (Heaiing
Arts Centre) Jason Rabineau (formerly
of Day By the Rive r ) plays during this

ELERS (Chip's) Classic zydeco with a
funky modern twist. Hailing from
Baytown, TX, this ensemble is touring
behind a new one titled Funky Nation.

NICKEL (Tasty World) A newly-formed,
four-piece Athens rock band smashing
up the Hiisker-inspired rock. Fast,
assertive and rough-hewn.
PRINCETON REVERBS COLONIAL
(Ultramod) Such focus and reflection!
This sophisticated indie rock band from
New Hampshire recently issued forth a
vinyl-only LP titled Christ On The
Forehead of 144,000 (Red Carpet
Ring)—an eerie and waltzy march and
stomp through the grungier comers of
underground American rock history.
Performing tonight alongside mates
from Rhode Island band Suzie’s Project
and local artists (mostly out of
FableFactory and other such bands)
open-mic “hootenanny style’ style. 8

RACK OF SPAM (Georgia Theatre)
The line-up includes Clarence Young
(vocals), Valerie Bart)in (vocals),
Randall Bramblett (tenor sax), Davis
Causey (guitar), Greg Veale (bass),
Chris Canalos (guitar). Tim White (key
board), John James (tenor sax), Tom
Ryan (baritore sax), Wayne Postell
(trumpet), Cal Hale (drums) and Dean
Quinter (percussion). These musicians
have pertormed with the likes of The
Flyers, Gregg Allman Band, Sea Level,
The Strawberry Flats, The Vibratones
and such early shag-era groups such
as The Jesters and The Genteeis.
Expect ‘Detroit/Memphis-style rhythm

Roddenberry has long been a player in
the local singer-songwriter scene. His
