Cosmic Charlie
Georgia Theatre
Through the latter quarter of
the 20th Century, the members of
psychedelic San Francisco band
The Grateful Dead meandered
along one of rock music's longest,
strangest trips in contemporary
American history. The longhaired
hippie band established itself as
the "ultimate cult band,"—a gang
of "merry pranksters" creating a
unique blend of musical styles while creating and fueling a unique sociological phenomenon
filled with notions of peace, love and mind-expanding mischief simultaneously.
The Athens-based ensemble Cosmic Charlie is a "Grateful Dead Tribute" that sprang up last
year out of something called One More Saturday Night—a casual project between like-minded
musicians who admired the musical flexibility and improvisational aspects of the Dead's sound.
This weeks' lineup consists of guitarist John Miley, vocalist Elissa Hadley (both of
Breathlanes), guitarist August West (of Fuzzy Sprouts fame), drummers Nate Hale (Space Voyage
Ahem), bassist A.J. Adams, pianist Jason Fuller and a few surprise guests.
Every Cosmic Charlie show includes two sets filled with all of the improvisational trappings
and material from the Dead's early Workingman's Dead era through Terrapin Station to In The
Dark.
Cosmic Charlie recently headlined the annual "Jerry Jain" at the Variety Playhouse in Atlanta
and plans to share the stage with String Cheese Incident P-Funk and Widespread Panic later this
month in North Carolina. (BL)
Room) Previously known as The
Coloring Project, this wild Athens band
recently embarked on a new art-rock-
noise journey and made one hell ot a
pit stop during AthFest 200C.

bred singer-guitarist used to play In the

capital town of Frankfort, Kentucky and

grain-belt rock. The quartet is currently
on tour supporting its second full-

joyous trek through Americanaland.
Every song is wrapped in catchy
melodies, guitar twang and solid, no-
nonsense rhythms. Produced by Jeffrey
Reed and Chris Hudson (the same team
that recorded lablemate Blue
Mountain’s Homegrom), the album
rolls as smoothly as anything Son Volt,
The Jayhawks, Uncle Tupelo... or, hell,
even Guadalcanal Diary ever dished
out. Playing a special early gig fol
