band plays songs by The Dave

MICHELLE MALONE (40 Watt) The
Atlanta singer-songwriter veteran will
play with her lull-band in celebration of
her jangiy and upbeat new album, Home
Grown.
MARSHMALLOW COAST (Flicker)
This band is largely the work of Andy
Gonzales, a Denver native who relocated
to Athens at the urging of his pal Julian
Koster (of Elephant-6 bands Neutral
Milk Hotel, Music Tapes). He released
the full-length debut Seniors And
Juniors on Kindercore last year. A
follow-up titled Marshmallow Coasting
is due out in October.
JOHN MAYER (40 Wttt) The Atlanta-
based singer-guitarist released his
debut album, Inside Wants Out. last year
and impressed the sweaty outdoor
crowds at the recent AttiFest with his
emotive style of blues-rock and pop.

Aspaing local disc jockeys can sign up
to spin their favorite old-school, hip hop
and breakbeats. Music and DJ sign-up
starts at 10 pin.
PARAKEET NELSON (DTs) Local gui
tarist Chris Cates (sometime known as
‘Mealtime Brovm* or “Parakeet
Nelson") fronts this unpredictable rock
ensemble. He will likely join his funky
brethren out of local band Phallic
Phungus for a loose jam session
tonight.
“RETRO DISCO INFERNO"
(Boneshakers) Brace yourself for the
bass-thumpin' sounds of the funkier,
edgier disco hits of the mid-*70s. Bum.
baby, burn.
THIMBLE CIRCUS (Ricker) Jill
Carnes paints the prettiest pictures in
the state. She gingerly leads this band
along an orchestral stroll through a
musical landscape in which the air
hangs heavy with the scent of paint and
magic marker ink. True art-rock.

TRANCES ARC (Tasty World) A newly-
formed rock trio—featuring drummer
Brad Hagen (ex-Gaslipht), bassist Greg
Cavinder. and guitarist Eric Toledo—

artist spins old-school hip hop tonight
on Broad Street.
DJ OMAR & MARK BELL (AMF) A
dance night filled with funky beats and
disco faves spun by two local seen-
esters.
FIELD TRIP (40 Watt) Although
Flagpole always says that this classic
rock band is from 'Bama, the truth is
that two of main songwriters relocated
here from the Auburn years ago and
struck up this groove-heavy group with
other local players. Word is the hand
has wrapped a recording session at
Maxwell Sound; look for a proper
release soon.

HAMTRAMCK (Tasty World)
Disaffected barflies, local scenoJter
know-it-alls and genuine rock music
tans connect with this loud and way
ward local (not straight-up punk sound.
This band has reportedly finished its
debut collection at Elixir Studios. Expect
some aoerijic witticisms and loud,
angular mischief.
JET BY OAY (Above) This Athens rock
trio has spent most of the last two years
building on its solid foundation in the
local indie scene, gaming attention for
its aggressive, guitar-heavy sound and
post-punk leanings. Look for the third
proper release—a ten-song collection
tentatively titled Please Unnng The Bell
this fall.

MEDICINE MAN (Caledonia) Vocalist
Carla Lefever (formerly of Groove Side
Down) has described her new local
band as tooty-shakin' bottom with cut
ting guitar, sultry vocals and horns.’
MICHAEL (Caledonia) This hard-hit
ting indie rock trio started playing
together in Athens and Atlanta in 1993,
released two T records and celebrated
the release of its moody, guitar-dense,
murderously effective debut album, You
Must Be This &//(Ghostmeat/Good
Blonde).

SENTS" (Mean MikeS) “Hype
Thursday" includes house and trance.

POSH TONER (Boar's Head) This local
sextet mixes roots-reggae. ska-infused
pop, straight ahead rock song structures
and Latin funk.
ROY CARRIER A THE NIGHT
ROCKERS (Kiassics) In the face of the
newer, more frenetic dancehai! sound
preferred by the likes A Bear Jocque,
Carrier and his band play in a more tra
ditional, classic R&8 style similar to the
great Clifton Chenier. The latest disc is
titled Zydeco Strokin'. 9 pun.
SIKH ARA (Tasty World) Experimental
trio from Winston-Salem. The band
uses drum machines and electronic
nads along with acoustic percussion
with chanting to create a ‘tribal’ sound.
Lock for its self-released weirdness on
Radon Records. Proceeds from tonight’s
show will benefit the family of a member
of Rhode Island band 25 Suaves (pals
ot the band and club).
SOUNDTRACK MIND (90.5 FM)
Athens-based alt-pop trio. Performing
on WUOG's ‘Live In The Lobby" at 8
p.m.
TEETER DRISCKLE (Nowhere Bar)
Newly-formed roots-rock and groove
band featuring members of local bands
40 Acres and Boss Tweed. Covers and
originals.
VELURE (40 Watt) Shuffle-inducing
rock and roll. Read about this newly-
established Athens band on p. 23.
THE WHITE OCTAVE (Above) Anew
indie-rock on Deep Elm Records fea
turing a former guitarist of popular
underground rock band Cursive.

“CIRCUIT NOISE" (Boneshakers)
Danoe night off Thomas Street with DJ
Kellie.
DELICIOUS (Engine Room) Loud, psy
chedelic instrumental rock band from
Asheville, NC capable of performing an
entire, lengthy orchestral rock piece
from top to bottom.
EO KEMPER TRIO (Caledonia) This
underground rock trio from
Montgomery, AL, is super-heavy—both
psychologically and sonicalfy. The band
combines pounding 8th note droning
with digital samples, angular guitar and
d'um work and lyrics which seem to
scream ‘ahhh, what the fuck?!" Every
gig this band has played in town has
been ace.
THE F-HOLES (Barnes & Noble) This
local acoustic folk and 'grass ensemble
‘creates its own unique interpretation of
bluegrass’ 8 pin.
FIVE WAY FRIDAY (40 Watt) Hailing
from the capital city of the Pa’metto
State, this a1t-p;p sextet plays that
twangy Southern pop that the elegantly
shabby college preps seem to love—in
the same vein as Matchbox Twenty, Gin
Blossums and Wallliowers. Hope-filled,
semi-soulful vocals, Hammond organ
action and straightahead song struc
tures. The band is currently louring
behind an album titled Run Like This
(Mile Marker).
GEORGIA OVERDRIVE (Kiassics)
Local quintet playing country-rock and
classic rock covers and originals.
JENNIFER NETTLES BAND (40 Watt)
The ever-jubilant Nettles fronted the
hugely popular local act Soul Miner's
Daughter until the band's amicable split.
She’ll perform various classics and new
songs off of her recent album, Story Of
Your Bones—an edgy and conf ident
record that perhaps signifies the group's
spirited sense of renewal. Watch for an
impressive tag team drum solo from
drummer Brad Sikes and percussionist
Mike Cebulski.
JACK THE LAO (Lunch Paper) Our
kid. The dapper Athenian spins British
ska and Northern Soul during happy
hour from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.
JUMBO WOOD (AMF) Former Athens
singer-songwriter Eric Britt (ex-Hazel
Virtue. The Revolvers) relocated to
Charleston, SC over a year ago and
seemingly took the plaoe by storm with
this melodic alt-rock quartet.
LEFT FRONT TIRE (AMF) Punkish
Athens alt-rock quartet specializing in
fast and melodic blasts and super-tight
arrangements that fit nicely alongside
works by Green Day and Blink 182.
MAEVIN JACKSON (Engine Room)
High-voltage Athens band playing all-
instrumental surf-rock and metallic
sludge.
MIKE WILLIS BAND (DTls) This
Atlanta outfit plays acoustic-based
Southern Rock that reportedly falls
somewhere between the Eagles and Lyle
