LOST & FOUNDRY
How Green Was My Valley
LET JOHN DO IT Sinister inside/outside forces have created turmoil in Oconee County Republican politics (is there any other kind out
there?). The local party's choice for a candioate to run in place of Commission Chairman Wendell Dawson has been overruled by the state
party at the behest of a small group of willful men, many of them named "John."
Could the same thing also happen here in Athens-Clarke? Nobody gives Republican candluate Jim Smith any chance to beat Democrat Ken
Mauldin in the general election for District Attorney. Suppose the party decided to supersize its candidate and trade up to one who could
win? Surely Col Smith as a loyal Republican would agree to step aside? Then the Johns could have another go at it. Why not Harry Gordon
for a return match? Or maybe Wendell Dawson, a proven campaigner? Or maybe a lawyer named John. ^—
Come on: let's have some fun.
NO SMOKING As I ate lunch at the downtown Taco Stand on August 15, looking out the windows at the SPLOST-funded construction work
on Broad Street, I noticed one of the big yellow earth movers idling, spewing plumes of gray smoke frorr its exhaust pipe. I continued to
watch; the workers, oblivious, walked by the machine many times. But no one used it, or moved it at all. It just sat there, expelling a car
cinogenic cloud above the busy sidewalks. It was still chugging away, still unoccupied, when I left the restaurant 40 minutes later. A call to
SPLOST Project Manager Kevin Hamby about this went unanswered. (Brad Aaron) —
