The F-Holes
The Boar’s Head
Birthed shortly Larry Keel s
departure fiom popular North
Carolina grass outfit McGraw Gap,
the hatpicking Larry Keel
Experience has spent the better
part of the last five years armed
with a full tank of unleaded and a
collective four on the Root.
Relying on generous word-of-
mouth support and dogged determination, the ever-ready LKE has since earned quite a reputa
tion among both stodgy Blue Ridge purists and recently-converted “newgrass" fervorists.
Formed by versatile guitar picker Keel, along with wife and bassist Jenny, the LKE's slim 'n'
sharp trio plus guests arrangement has become a veritable tradition in itself. Past stops have
featured a rotating cast of renowned pickers including mandolinists BiUy Constable (Doug Dillard
Band, Hypnotic Clambake) and Jason Krekel (Snake Oil Medicine Show), KcGraw Gap banjo picker
Will Lee, as well as former Newgrass Revivalist and dobro maestro Curtis Burch.
Between numerous road expeditions, the LKE somehow fouiid the hours necessary to put
together its self-titled third album, cementing its reputation for unabashed individuality all in
the name of tradition most sacred. Highlighted by rambling originals ("Tombstones," "Lonely"),
as well as kind nods to the forefathers of th* current btuegrass-on-fringe movement (Original
Skillet ticker Rdey Puckett's Tm Getting Ready to Go" and a fiery take on John Hartford's "All
Fall Down"), the LKE's new slab and its genre-bending live show conKrm its status as one of the
best any kind-of- grass outfits out there, period.
To further satiate your string-bondin' cravings, make it out earty for local footstompers the F-
Hoiev The ever evolving foursome shares the stage once more with the Keel, ensuring a veritable
pot lock of prodigious pickin’ and down home pontiftcation. In other words, if this flour don’t get
the biscuits rising, you're just flapjack outta luck. [Michael Andrews]
