13) Director Mark Pellington has suc
ceeded. at least in part, in making what
could have been a hokey |Oke (Richard

engaging, thought-provoking, and at
times, downright scary film. Based on
the novel of the same name by John
Keen. The Mothman Prophecies is an
updated. Iiclionatized account of actual
events that look place in Point Pleasant.
West Virginia in 1967. You will be left
with unanswered questions, but that's

idea was it to remake a boring parable
about the triumph ot the individual
(1975's Rollerball) into this hyperki
netic. fetishistic mess? A hot young
athlete lakes the money-paved road to

East Asia that combines basketball,
hockey and roller derby. Things get
ugly fast though when his team's owner
figures out that blood = high TV rat
ings. At least the original has James
Caan. Chris Klein is awful as the
"hero;” LL Cool J is wasted (literally)
and Rebecca Romin-Slamos makes the
smart career move from wearing blue
latex (in X-Men) to being topless! See

Director Wes Anderson's dry. dark and
delightful comedy about the quirkiest ol

in blue don't take a hankering to this

images While it would have simultane
ously been one of the most boring and
pretentious films ever made had it been
a live action release, the animated ver
sion is simply gorgeous—-a great film
predicated on the originality of its
visuals alone The loose plot follows a
mam character through his dreams, in
which he carries on various philosoph
ical conversations with random cliarac
ters Considering the movies obses
sion with human potential, if only
seems lifting that Linklaler's film is a
lust as he finally discovers a method
