‘AH-NULD’ IS BACK
COLLATERAL DAMAGE (R) However unfair, Arnold
Schwarzenegger's latest. Collateral Damage, will
inextricably be linked and compared to the events
of Sept. 11 because of both its subject matter and
its originally intended release date (Oct. 5th). But
although Schwarzenegger's movies have always
used a paper-thin layer of semper-fied politics to
justify their socially reprehensible bloodiest, to
suggest—as director Robert Altman has—that
they and others like them probably inspired the
World Trade Center aftacks, by planting ideas in
the minds of terrorists, is an over-simplification.
While Hollywood has shamelessly furthered our
own embarrassing social and cultural perspectives,
it is only catering to a pre-existing audience.
Regardless of this debate. Collateral Damage was
completed well before the tragedy, and should be
considered with this in mind.
Schwarzenegger stars as Los Angeles fireman
Gordon Brewer, who sees his wife and child die
from a bomb explosion triggered by a Colombian
terrorist known as "The Wolf." After the U.S. gov
ernment decides to let the Colombian government
handle its revolutionary terrorists on its own,
Brewer must avenge his family by himself. His
plan: infiltrate guerrilla training camps, find The
Wolf, and kitl him.
Fans will be happy to know that this is the
first old-school "Ah-nuld" movie since 1996's
Eraser (The 6th Day doesn't quite count). Besides
a typically stolid Arnold (sadly missing most of
the bad puns). Collateral Damage features Three
Kings' amazing Cliff Curtis. Curtis—who will never
receive the roles he deserves because of his skin
color—gives a solid performance as The Wolf.
Also, John Leguizamo and John Turturro provide
nice comic relief in their cameos as a drug dealer
and a prison inmate, respectively.
While his previous job involved extinguishing
fires, Schwarzenegger's Brewer must have learned
a thing or two about starting them, because there
are plenty of explosions once he invades
Colombia. Ironically, the only major flaw in the
movie is that there is not enough ridiculous vio
lence (having been toned down at Arnold's
request as he contemplates a gubernatorial cam
paign in California).
Unfortunately, the trend in action movies has
drifted away from the farces that were Commando
or Rambo. and has instead gone to ultra-realistic
recreations of war, a la Black Hawk Down. While
none of them really tell a story, at least no one
will ever take the politics of an Arnold action flick
seriously. Nor will they confuse it with art.
