follow their 1993 debut Suture, with this
tense thriller that is also a character
study, providing what may be the
greatest role for a woman since 1996's

dered his older mate lover. Margaret
(Orlando's Tilda Swinton) sets into
motion an intricate chain ot events.
When the mysterious Alek Spera (Goran
Visnjic ol “£/?’) blackmails her, ho
quickly recognizes tier extraordinary
strength and capacity for love, and the
two develop a relalior.ship of mutual
respect Taut direction, gorgeous cine
matography awash in hues of blue, and
a dominating performance by Swinton

optimistic. Director Tom Shadyac (Patch
Adams. Ace Ventura) switched Irom
comedy but quick after children became

Costner) loses his wile, only to be
haunted by constant visions ol dragon
flies and eerie messages from beyond

GATTACA (PG-13) 1997. This pleas
antly surprising debut from New Zealand
writer/director Andrew Niccol went
largely unnoticed during its initial
release, despite the presence of Ethan
Hawke and Uma Thurman in the lead
roles. Conceived naturally in the geneti
cally engineered future, Vincent Freeman
(Hawke) has a life expectancy of only 30
years, thus crushing his dreams ol space
travel However. Freeman purchases the
identity of a paralyzed, scientific wun-
derkind (Jude Law), and uses his genes
to infiltrate the Gattaca Corporation,
where he falls in love with an attractive
co-worker (Thumian) Although not a
great film by any means, it still features
gorgeous production ond is a highly
underrated entry into the more

HART’S WAR (R) Fans of Stalag 17
will enjoy this latest installment in the
pseudo-retro v, r ar him genre Colin

American soldiers in a German prison
camp. When two black ranking officers
join the barracks, racial tensions arbe
and eventually lead to murder. An intra-
prison Inal ensues with Farrell's brown
eyed Carson Daly-ish innocence lacing
oft against Bruce Willis’ William
Holden-like stoicism European charmer
Marcel lures fills the Otto Preminger
role as the beguiling SS major in a
memorable performance. Ttie Mm com
bines several sub-genres (e g, prison
escape, coudroom drama) without
indulging in the cliches of any of them.
Trust and loyalty are tested among men
who are not always on the same side, or
at least not obviously so The vidues of
a soldier are ultimately celebrated
without a single splash of tacky 'red.
white, and blue'-ism to clutter the
strangely beautiful ash-gray harshness
of a world war. This movie is well worth

the novel of the same name by John
Keen. The Mothman Prophecies is an
updated, fictionalized account ol actual
events that took place in Point Pleasant.
West Virginia in 1967. You will tie left
with unanswered questions, but that’s

This is meticulously bad. To be lair, the
lampooning business is wrought with
peril due to ttie excessive number ol
jokes attempted, but recent tendencies
to scrape the mindless dregs of
overused excrement humor is just plain
exhausting to watch at times. [GC]

director Darren Aronofsky tells ttie story
ol an obsessive-compulsive, genius
mathematician (Sean Gullette) who
locks himsell in his New York City
apadment to devote himself to finding a
pattern in the stock market using chaos
theory. He becomes the target of both a
Wall Stree. firm and a Hasidic cabal. All
of the techniques that would be
expanded in Requiem are here: horrify
ingly subjective camera angles, musi
cally inspired editing, and a fresh return

release date, something must be wrong.

own. The eldest child, Jane, does not
believe her mother's tales—until
Captain Hook kidnaps her to help him
find his treasure. This sequel will only
appeal to younger children, and prob
ably barely avoided a direcl-to-video

developed a nice chemistry, and the
unlikely addition of veteran actor Bryan
Cox (Rushmore) as then boss creates
more than a few extra laughs With a
little luck, this movie could easily reach
outside of its cult audience and become
