"POP DISASTER TOUR"
May 18. 2002
Hi-Fi Buys Amphitheater. Atlanta
The only thing even remotely disas
trous about the Pop Disaster iour was
that Blink 182 agreed lo go out on the
road with Green Day in the first place.
The alternative rock gods ot the ‘90s.
better known as Green Day. made Blink
182 look like a bunch ol amateur, potty
mouthed lackasses on stage, but I’m
tumping ahead let’s start from the
beginning
Security was unusually tight, with
the girls having lo empty all of their
pockets and some even being asked to
remove their shoes In the adiacent line,
the boys were patted down with security
checking around their ankles for any
concealed weapons. Bui all that was
ever lound was an ubiquitous dispos
able camera thal was appropriately dis
posed of before the owner could pass
through the gates Inside, the mersh was
overpriced as usual and tents were set
up to market the wares ol Blink 182 and
friends through the brand names
Famous Stars and Straps and Atticus o
The festivities got under way pretty §
much right on lime as Jimmy Eat World £
atrocious, probably because be couldn't
care less and plus Ibe band never
rehearses anyways, so why try lo sound
good 9 Mark Hoppus was right on. but
overall. Blink couldnl hold a candle to
V Green Day All of the band's songs
sounded the same, there was no dis
tinction as it passed from hits to album
cuts As a Blink Ian. I still loved it. but
the ‘Your Mom" |okes did gel a bit old
alter a while When you can’l distinguish
one song from the next. 75 minutes
does get somewhat trying
Yet Barkers rising, upside down
twirling kit made up tor a lot Hands
down hes the backbone and most tal
ented member ot Ibe trio, not missing a
beat as he's suspended over the stage
playing upside down a la Tommy Lee
introduced itsett to Atlanta and put on a
solid performance Playing the majority
ol the tracks from its latest record like
"Praise Chorus." ‘The Sweetness" and
"If You Don! Donl." Jimmy Eat World A
surprisingly had the crowd energised
and moving in the seals Though the
members are a little geeky. not
exactly the bombshell rock star
type, they still gave an excellent
show and proved that they
deserved to be on this h>gh pro
file tour
Simply put . Green Day put
on one ot the best shows I have
ever seen As strong musicians,
but still seasoned entertainers,
Green Day rocked it with the stuff
that legends are made ol The
band played all of its hits,
opening with "Mana." tossing in
the smgtes from alt ol then
albums enticing the audience ail
along the way Of course the
band did its trademark move.
Build Your Own Rock Band by
pulling three members out of the
audience to play on stage, and *
to everyone's astonishment, the £
