MUSIC NEWS AND GOSSIP
New Noise From The Farm: Record label/wildlife preservation outfit/
commune Orange Twin Records has a new one on the streets and a
few others on the way. Trashy DJ duo Boom Box 2000 has an
eponymous dehut in stores now. Engineers Hr. Law (local artiste/
provocateur Kenneth Law) and DJCJ (local filmmaker/geek about
town Chris Jolly) supposedly put this thing together while "living
in their car hustling thongs and PBRs," and the album was
"recorded in various by-the-hour hotel rooms in Athens, GA on high
quality equipment.'’ Long-awaited new stuff from passionate
acoustic outfit Lovers and Belle & Sebastian proteges Great Lakes
will hit streets on August 20. The
Lovers disc is entitled Star Li!
Sunken Ship and the Great Lakes'
new one is The Distance Between.
"Let Me Go On": The vital, self
titled debut album from wussy
punk-folk boys The Violent
Femmes got the deluxe re-issue
treatment from the incredibly cool
people at Rhino and hit stores on
Tuesday. June 18. The re-ish is a
two-disc set. with disc one split
between the original 10 songs plus
11 demos and rare tracks, and disc
two packed with 15 live tracks,
including an interview and a few
songs that were never recorded in
the studio. Given that none of the
other Femmes discs are one tenth as good as the first, and the only
good stuff on the "Best Of' disc is either material from the first
album or the song "American Music," this is probably the only
Femmes disc you'll ever need to own. Meanwhile, lead singer-gui
tarist Gordon Gano is putting out an album late August titled
Bitting The Ground Gano wrote all the songs for other people to
sing and performed on most of the songs as well. Guest vocalists
include PJ Harvey Mary Lou Lord, John Cale, Lou Reed, Frank Black
and They Might Be Giants.
Truckers News Athens band The Drive-By Truckers have officially
signed on with the Lost Highway record label. Lost Highway is the
brainchild of veteran Nashville music exec Luke Lewis, who, as head
of Universal Music Group s Mercury Nashville label, says he began to
"lose some passion" for country music as it got watered down in the
1990s. So he got his bosses at Universal to let him launch Lost
Highway (the name of a tune sung by Hank Williams) as a home for
a stable of singer-songwriters wanting to steer clear of over-the-top
marketing. The Truckers self-released concept album. Southern Rock
Opera, will be re-released as-ts on July 16. "We re realty happy to
have siqned a band that writes, tours and performs in the tradition
of Southern Rock, a term you
don t hear much these days "
says Lewis The Truckers play at
this week s Flagpole Athens
Music Awards at the Morton
Theatre on Thursday June 20
and at AthFest 2002 Frontman
Patterson Hood carries on with
a solo gig at Flicker Theatre &
Bar on Monday June 24 (BL]

recording its debut full length They ve done it alt themselves so far
but they 11 be going to Andy Baker at Chase Park Transduction for

album once it s completed Welt keep you posted
local garage-glam-bloo? band Breakheart Beat is that there were
some big-time label folks at its show at the Tasty World awhile
back, and the bigwigs were interested in the Beat. Wining, dining
and showcasing in New York should be just around the comer. Good
luck, guys, and I'm sure I don't have to tell you this, but be careful:
Major labels have all of the humanity of a genocidal fascist regime,
and none of the principled consistency.
Musical Womyn For Your Listening Pleasure: The fourth "Women On
Top" showcase is on deck for Thursday, June 27, at Tasty World
The ever-industrious Heidi Hensley is putting it
all together, and she'll be playing

songwriter Moe Loughran.
< Ain't That Guff Enuff?: Word on
the street is that 706 Punk Rock
Teamsters Guff have been inkin'
something besides tattoos—namely
record contracts. The boys are on
the road at present, with shows all
the way out to California and back,
so we don't have a lot of details
yet. Their website reports that the
tour is going incredibly well and
that Guff will have a track on the
next Go-Kart Records compilation
Go-Kart vs. The Corporate Giant Vol. 3.
The band's got a fresh dose of mersh
available from its website guffmusic.com, and it returns to Athens
on June 28.
