NOT JUST A FLUKE
The second annual FLUKE is hitting Tasty world
on Saturday, Jan. 11 from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. FLUKE
2003 is a small press comics and 'zine event show
casing local and regional artists who create comics,
'zines and "all sorts of independent and small press
work." Admission to the event includes a copy of
the FLUKE 2003 comics anthology, featuring the
work of 10-15 artists and compiled with the aid of
the fine folks at Bizarro Wuxtry.
FLUKE got started last year when artists who
had been planning to travel to the Small Press Expo
in Maryland (canceled due to the September 11 ter
rorist attacks) decided to hold their own mini expo
right here in Athens. Event organizer Robert
Newsome says, "FLUKE was really small last year,
there was bad weather and it was raining. Everybody involved admits that it has a dumb name,
but it really was a fluke that it came about anyway. We just threw something together."
Even so, the event attracted comics artists from as far away as Texas and Illinois. Newsome
and company decided to make it an annual event. Newsome: "I am actually surprised all the time
at how many people in Athens and the surrounding area are doing self publishing and have been
doing this for a long time. There's no real small press gathering in the Southeast. I don't think
FLUKE is ready to take up that role yet, but it is something I want to keep doing." He says that
eventually is could be an event where people come from all over the Southeast to share their
work: not a comics convention, not necessarily geared to the fan or the collector, but to the
artists, those who are putting their work out there.
So come and peruse some of the most cutting edge comics and 'zines and meet the artists
who created them, then stick around for the "after party" featuring the Athens (Uninsured) Circus
of the Bars, along v/ith local bands Doll Farm, Madeline, Zumm Zumm and more. Admission is
only $5. [Margaret Moore]
