Kenny Roby
Flicker Theatre & Bar
Led by top shelf singer/songwhter Kenny
Roby, Raleigh, NCs Six String Drag was one of
the last decade's most exciting and original
bands to straddle the country/rock fence.
Propelled by Roby's well-deep baritone and a
penchant for classic homespun harmonies—a la
Stanley Bothers, Louvins, etc.—as well as a
knack for incorporating vintage R&B and soul
arrangements right up there with that of Robbie
Robertson, SSD released two albums (1996's Six -
String Drag and 1997s High Hat) before calling it
quits during the final stages of recording their
third full-length.
The excellent solo debut, Mercury's Blues, fol
lowed in 2000. Backed by a cast of friends from
converging Carolina music camps including SSD drummer Ray Duffey and versatile Countdown
Quartet bassist Steve Grothmann, the album pushed Roby's songwriting talents and his under
lying grasp of distinctively gritty Southern styles—Stax/Volt R&B, Staple Singers-ish gospel, bar
room C&W—to the forefront, earning high acclaim and comparisons to artists ranging from the
Band to sardonic Roby fave Randy Newman.
While touring behind Mercury's Blues, Roby hooked up with old friend and ex-V-Roys frontman
Scott Miller for a string of solo acoustic shows in which they traded off informal sets of stories
and song. The emotion and camaraderie exhibited in those shows will likely carry over to the
intimate Flicker stage tonight as Roby rolls back into town with songs from his new album Rather
Not Know. Expect him to call on some local support including former Six String Draggers and cur
rent Workhorses of the Recreational/ Entertainment Industiy Rob Keller and William Tonks.
There's no opener and it's a traditionally early Ricker show (8:30 p.m.) so come early and be glad
you didn't miss out on one of the South's best kept songwriting secrets. [Michael Andrews]
