ASPHALT BLASTER (40 Watt)
Former Black Crowe/Brand New
Immortal Johnny Colt leads this
“Stoner rock" combo from ATL. Colt
says that he’s “like Peaches & Herb:
reunited and it feels so good" with his
audience. Then he adds. “We seem to
attract people who are... sick of the
bullshit they have to hear all day. I
knew there were people out there who
felt the way we do. I just didn’t know
there were so many." They'll play after
the “Don’t Try This At Home" Jack Ass
Club Show featuring Steve-0. “As long
as there are no bodily fluids being
exchanged I think I’m okay," the head
Blaster states of his bill-mates. “We’re
going to ask Steve-0 to tattoo smiiey
faces on us It’s gonna be horrible, but
great in that stupid punk rock way."

THE BREAKFAST CLUB (Georgia
Theatre) This new weekly ‘80s live music
extravaganza flashes back to the era of
checkered shoes and parachute pants.
CIDER (DT’s) This Florida modern rock
act has opened for Sugar Ray. per
formed on Nickelodeon’s "Slime Time
Live," from the MTV beach house, and
at George W.’s Presidential Inaugural
Celebration. They’ve also recorded with
legendary producer/engineer Eddie
Kramer (Led Zeppelin. Jimi Hendrix,
KISS). Busta Rhymes perhaps said it
best when he exclaimed about the ’
band. “They put it down!” Sugarcoat
(Independent) is out now.
CRASHING AT DAWN (Tasty World)
Berklee College Of Music alum Nick
Kirk (guitar) and bassist Matt Utterback
formed Crashing At Dawn along with
drummer Chris Westbrook and
frontman Billy Wilkerson. The Atlanta-
based quartet struggled while half of its
members were away at school, writing
songs by mailing tapes back and forth
up the East Coast. The group claims to
be under the influence of 311, Incubus
and Pearl Jam while striving to "create
a sound that has the intehsity of rock, a
funk groove and the tonalities of
jazz/soul."
DICTATORTOTS (40 Watt) If Athens
were on the North Atlantic coastline.
the Dictatortots would be the
marauding Viking types pillaging the
scene, leaving in their bloody wake a
trail of spray-Styrofoam, canned chili,
empties and Slim Jims. But the band’s
crude, skin-of-the-teeth clink and clank
manages to be both wild and struc
tured sounding at the same time! A
crunching steamroller of non-subtlety.
Hrumph. [BL)
FAVORITE (Tasty World) ATL alt-
rockers melding shreds of hardcore
punk with the more melodic stuff the
young ’uns call punk nowadays.
JIM McKILLIP TRIO (Silver Screen
Grill, Crawford) The jazz combo plays
standards and originals. 7-11 p.m.
THE MANY FACES OF BRENDAN
FRASER (DT’s) George Of The Jungle
style rock. Originals and (dare I say it?)
covers.
TODD McBRIDE (Caledonia) Best
known as the former frontman for
Dashboard Saviors, Todd McBride
mixes roots with his rocks. Fans of the
Saviors should come out as 3/4 of the
band are scheduled to play at this show.
“RETRO DISCO INFERNO”
(Boneshakers) 70s, ’80s and ‘90s dance
music every Wednesday.
TWAIN (Caledonia) Eric “Big E”
Gregory leads this ramshackle roots-
rock combo. The Athens-based outfit
plays high-wired rock and roll a la The
Beat Farmers and The Bottle Rockets,
highlighted by Gregory’s intelligent,
straight-forward and brutally honest
lyricism. [BL]
USED FOR COMPARISON (Tasty
World) Boppy alt-pop trio from Atlanta
that owes as much to Herman's Hermits
as The Flaming Lips. Their bio boasts,
“One might say that a YIG oscillator
cannot vibrate at anywhere near the fre
quency at which Used For Comparison
rocks it."
ROB VEAL (Caledonia) “Sly and low-
key singer-guitarist Rob Veal (former
bassist of Dashboard Saviors) is one of
Athens’ finest songwriters in the roots-
rock vein, crafting dark tales that are full
of sly wit," according to Flagpole scribe
Ballard Lesemann. Rob will share his
set with another ex-Savior as lead gui
tarist Mike Gibson is due to sit in. With
former frontman Todd McBride on the
bill as well, surely there'll be some nos
talgic collaboration.
Thursday. January 16
ASSFAULT (Allen's) This mysterious
new rock crew seems to have taken to
heart the immortal words of Spinal Tap,
“It’s a fine line between clever and
stupid."
CIGARELLO (40 Watt) Local rock and
roll with an accessible, contemporary
sound. The band describes itself as “a
cross between NoFX and the Ben Folds
Five, pop with retro and punk tenden
cies." [BL]
DJ CHRISIS (Annex) The “host-with-
tha-skills." Tonight, he’ll be spinning at
an appreciation party for our SEC
Champion football team. Who knows
who’ll be in attendance? If you’re a fan,
you should go..
DJ D (Last Call) Also known as “DJ
Daryl," this Atlanta-based turntablist
plays a variety of dance styles.
“GROOVE THERAPY" (Boneshakers)
DJ43 and Camilus keep things spinning
all night in a special house tag team
session that’ll rip the floor up with
breaks and techno.
THE HAPPENING (One Love) Local
blues-jazz fusion crew.
KEVN KINNEY (Georgia Theatre)
Kinney’s latest solo effort, Broken
Hearts And Auto Parts {Evil Teen), is
his best in ages. The Drivin’N’Cryin’
frontman successfully mixes the ami
able jangle and charm of that band’s
earlier-work with the more personal,
direct type of songwriting that has
made his soloTeleases such high
lights. [Mike Andrews]
JASON LEWIS (DT’s) Local singer-
guitarist playing acoustic rock covers
and originals.
LIONS FROM ZION (Roadhouse)
Jefferson "Legalize Nature” Taffett and
his band of positive groovers shake the
