RED LEADER (40 Watt) Firmly
entrenched in the sounds and textures

Red Leader provides the perfect sound
track to any form of chemical induced
madness.

pop-rock/punk outfit founoed by local
skater dudes Scott and Mike.
YOUNG ANTIQUES (Caledonia) A
melodic, guitar-driven power-trio from

Stipe. [BLl

Geoff Reacher
Flicker Theatre & Bar
About a month ago, the Flagpole
music department got an email from
a guy that read like this:
"My name is Geoff Reacher. I just
moved to town and hope to be doing
a lot of playing. I play left-field
country blues with beats and teeth."
It then went on to mention an
album entitled Future Reachers, a
country record reputed to have all
the elements of the genre—guitar
and fiddle pickin', accordion, slide
guitar—with, get this, synthesized space noises overlaid. So, we popped it in and it was exactly
what it said it was—country music with a techno edge. And man, it was good.
Reacher moved to Athens recently from New York City where he played in the small club cir
cuit and was said to defy alt-country conventions even as bands like Uncle Tupelo were defining
them.
"The thing I'm most proud of right now is not... that I'm integrating electronics with country
and blues music—but that I'm finally doing it spontaneously and I'm doing it live," Reacher says.
"I've been messing with drum machines and synths for a long time, but I've never liked standing
on-stage playing along to a pre-sequenced backing track... I was pretty inspired by the first
Peaches show I saw. She was working her sequencer in real-time, pressing buttons, turning
knobs, bringing parts in and out, making the sequences work for her instead of working for them.
And it sounded really alive, really visceral. That's the same thing I'm trying to do, but I do it
with foot pedals since I play guitar, too."
The Flicker show marks the second of Reacher's Athens shows after his debut at Tasty World in
November. [Sarah Lee]
