Finding Common Ground Between Rock And Folk,
es It One Last Shot
As of
Friday, April 25, the defunct-ness
of Claire & Bain's Maple Yum-Yum
will be drawn into question as the duo takes to
the Caledonia stage.
But wait. There's a catch.
The two will be touting their solo acts,
Campbell's Hope For Agoldensummer, and
Mattox's, you guessed it, Bain Mattox. As a special
treat for the fans, however, The Maple Yum-Yum
decided to band (pun intended) together one
more time to see if they've still got it.
"We hadn't played together in a while, and we
wanted our bands to play together," Campbell says
simply of the show.
The two originally met in Atlanta where the
sparks that lit their relationship—and The Maple
Yum-Yum—on fire flew, Campbell says.
"We met at a showcase in Atlanta and we were
instantly boyfriend and girlfriend. There was no
'just friends' phase," she says.
It was from this original meeting that the
name "Maple Yum-Yum" originated as well, Mattox
says. After the two heard an Atlanta rapper fond
of using explicit sexual innuendoes, the term
"Maple Yum-Yum" stuck out. "It was kind of a
metaphor for sex," Mattox says.
The two made a mutual decision to break up
after divergent musical paths became incongruous
with The Maple Yum-Yum's sound.
"[The breakup] was coming for a while,"
Campbell says. "Bain has always been more of a
rock and roller."
"Her and I had different opinions on what we
wanted to do," Mattox says. "I was pushing her
to be more rock and she was pushing me to be
more folk."
After the amicable breakup of the Maple Yum-
Yum, the two remained close friends and con
tinued their musical careers down separate
paths. Campbell stuck with the more folksy sound
of the Yum-Yum with a little spice of politics for
good measure.
"I'm an anarcho-communist and I use our
shows to forward those views," she says. "The
music's usually pretty slow, slow and pretty."
"She's a 200-pound soul singer trapped in a
skinny white girl's body," Mattox says.
Campbell says she relies heavily on the musical
prowess of her new musical companions to drive
Hope For Agoldensummer's sound. "As far as musi
cianship goes, [my bandmates] are all so much
better than I am. They've all been studying their
instruments for a while."
Mattox, on the other hand, decided to move
on to his more rock-oriented project, Tutupi,
later changing the name to Bain Mattox at the
request of his management agency. He says he
credits The Maple Yum-Yum with helping launch
his solo career.
"A lot of the sound that's going on now is
because of Maple Yum-Yum," he says. "I've
always been very interested in folk music. I
credit Claire with a lot of it. She was like 'Here,
try this accordion.'"
"He's a wiz," Campbell says. "He picks up
instruments and knows how to play them. He's an
amazing musician. I think I kind of took that for
granted when we were playing together, and
didn't fully realize it until I saw him on-stage with
his new band."
Mattox not only differs from Campbell musi
cally in his rock and roll leanings, but in his
lyrical style as well. "I definitely focus more on
emotions. I think the main reason I don't put pol
itics into my music is because everyone's doing
that. I have my own opinions away from the
music." he says.
While the ex-duo may diverge on some mat
ters, there is one particular topic that they both
seem to strongly agree on.
"I love Athens. It's my favorite place to live.
I'm always glad to call Athens home," Campbell
says. "In this town you have so many resources.
Obviously the diversity is a big draw for people.
I've learned a lot. It ends up that some of my
biggest influences are my next-door neighbors."
Says Mattox: "Athens is a nice city. There's
really cool things happening all the time, but it's
really slow. The cool thing about Athens is there's
so many artists. It's a great place for musicians
to meet."
Both Mattox and Campbell keep themselves
busy with their music, but music is not their only
pastime. "I paint all the time, as often as I can,"
Mattox says.
"I garden and take trapeze," Campbell says.
"I'm about to start working on a trapeze piece.
I'm going to have to learn how to be held by my
hair and hold myself up by my teeth."
As Bain Mattox and Hope For Agoldensummer
chart their separate courses, the future combined
history of The Maple Yum-Yum remains swinging,
trapeze-like, back and forth.
