THE AMITYV1LLE HORROR (R) No
matter on which side ol the paranormal
spectrum your bread is buttered, this
Michael Bay-produced remake has a
little something scary for you. Director
Andrew Douglas and writer Scott Kosar
have subdivided their version o( this
true story* into a decent little film
about a haunted housed predilection for
possession and a terribly overt ghost
story full of CG phantoms. Ryan
Reynolds and Melissa George are
believable as newlyweds whose first
home turns out to be the fixer-upper
from Hell (Beechwood, Carmike,
Highway 17 Theatres)

characters with surprising ease Starts

THE LIFE AQUATIC WITH STEVE

fourth film never quite congeals like his

A LOT UXE LOVE (PG-13) Maybe the
culprit is simply springtime, but
romance has been on the upswing
recently Hitch was entertaining (it too
long), and Fever Pitch was# least an
RBI double Now come Ashton Kutcher
and Amanda Peel making like Billy
Crystal and Meg Ryan with better hair
stylists in A Lot Like Love, a flick which
is a lot like a cute romantic comedy, if
not quite one. After having sex in an air
plane bathroom, Oliver (Kutcher) and
Emily (Peel) embark on an off-again,
off-again romance full of false starts,
bad timing, and questions of whether
their love is coincidence or fate Kutcher
and Peers chemistry takes a little while
to Ignite (he looks a little too much like
Frankenstein* monster throughout their
first encounter), but by their silent war
over tried rice, both have won the hearts
of each other and me. One less compli

MISS CONGENIALITY 2: ARMED
AND FABULOUS (PG-13) Sandra
Bullock* recent failure to score a major
hit has led her to star in one of the most
pointless ot pointless sequels. Tomboy
FBI Agent Gracie Hart is less a character
than a collection of traits (snorting,
kinky hair, a slouch) which any handler
(In the sequel* case, a stereotypical
ley but funny Diedrich Bader) worth his
salt could knock out in a single mon
tage. The Pygmalion tesk of the first film
is accomplished in a transition in the
sequel, leaving the audience with a
prissy princess. Ends Thursday
(Beechwood. Carmike)
NATIONAL TREASURE (PG) Jerry
Bruckheimer* latest megaplex-tiller is
the most exciting and mind-numbing
multimillion dollar tour of our nation*

popuiar Nicolas Cage as a guide, the
film makes history fun; unfortunately,
