ROBOTS (PG) Smalltime inventor
Rodney Copperbottom (Ewan
McGregor) is cn the run from cutthroat
executive Phineas T. Ratchet (Greg
Kinnear) and his evil mother. Madame
Gasket (Jim Broadbent). Rodney must
find Bigweld (Mel Brooks), the worlds
greatest robot While the narrative is not
so grand, the awesome instances ot
computer animated wow can make it
appear so. The script, your typical
family film fluff siightty revamped for
bots. contains just enough of an adult
edge to save it from drowning in the
shallow kiddie film pool, and the
celebrity-filled cast all entertain them
selves imoressivefy (Carmike)
THE ROYAL TENENBAUMS (R)
2001. Writer-director Wes Anderson*
third film may not be as darkly funny as
his mighty Rushmore, but it surely
equals that film* dark emotional core.
The Tenenbaums. an estranged (and just
plain strange) lamily. which includes
lather Royal (Gene Hackman), mother
Etheline (Angelica Huston), and their
three tortured genius ottspnng (Ben
Stiller. Gwyneth Paltrow and Luke
Wilson), reunites after the paterfamilias
announces his imminent death The
ensuing reconnections feel truer than
most domestic melodramas, and
Anderson* ability to wring the heart
while subtly rapping tne funny bone is
his own genius. The soundtrack, all ‘60s
and 70s pop compiled by the music-
loving filmmaker, who constructs
scenes around songs and not the tradi
tional vice versa, comes very close to
becoming a character itself. Shows
Thursday. 4/28 (Tate)
SAHARA (PG-13) Breck Eisner* adap
tation of the Clive Cussier bestseller has
all the familiar cannonade of explosions,
gunf ights, invincible heroes (American
natch), and a hottie.Cusster* SCUBA-
certified Indiana Jones/ James Bond
knockoff Dirk P«t! (Matthew
McConaughey) stumbles upon a wodd-
endangenng oceanic epidemic while
searching for a long-lost ironclad ship
filled with Confederate gold. He hooks
up with the most gorgeous W H O.
doctor ever (Penflope Cruz) while
palling around In the desert with child
hood chum A1 (the wretchedly underap
preciated Steve Zahn). Director Eisner
has some difficulty shooting and editing
the fight scenes, but McConaughey*
considerable charm and rapport with
Zahn keep this desolate cinematic desert
light and breezy. (Beechwood. Carmike.
Highway 17 Theatres)
SIN CITY (R) Robert Rodriguez slam-
bangs comic book god Frank Miller*
Sin City upon the silver screen with
bloody accuracy, staging the near tran
scendent violence so as to build to sev
eral tremendous crescendos of decapi
tations. dismemberments, below-the-
beit bullet wounds, and cannibalism.
Rodriguez, a visual guru who hides his
storytelling deficiencies behind camera
and editing tricks, has found the proper
meat in Miller* grisly tales. While
nothing ground-breaking (these tales
are as old as James M. Cain is dead),
the black-and- .rhite morality of Sin City,
where the bad guys are good and the
good guys bad, supply suitable stories
for Rodriguez* violent fixations. With a
visage unlike any seen on the big
screen. Sin City is the f irst comic book
film worthy of Bte title graphic film.
Comic book 1l.cks will never be the
same again. (Beechwood. Carmike)
THE UPSIDE OF ANGER (R) In
.\nger, writer-director Mike Binder chal
lenges himself with multi-layered
middie-aged mother Terry Wolfmeyer
(Joan Allen), a woman scorned after her
husband leaves. This anger leads her to
drink and former baseball legend-
turned-radio personality Denny Davies
(Kevin Costner). The film* strength lies
in its ability to balance grown-up
domestic humor, sometimes broad
characterizations and raw emotion, with
humor only occasionally trumping the
other two. Ends Thursday (Beechwood)
WE JAM ECONO (NR) A love letter to
The Minutemen. See story on p. 35.
Shows Wednesday. 5/4 (40 Wail)
WIZARDS (PG) 1977. Ralph Bakshi
combines science fiction with ok) world
magic. The world is post-apocalyptic as
good wizard Avatar attempts to vanquish
evil brother Blackwoll, a mutant who
wishes to subjugate all peoples with the
rediscovered weapons of 20th century
warfare. Some amazing visuals, beau
tiful in that era* trippy way, are con
founded by the Tolkien rip-off story.
(Blackwoll is just a mutant Saruman,
realty ) Bakshi being animation* answer
to Russ Meyer, plenty of buxom,
scantify-ciad vixens flaunt their unfea
sible proportions tor all the salivating
teenage boys in the audience. This flick
is really only noteworthy for those inter
ested in such tare. (You know who you
are Don! deny it) Listen tor Mark
Hamill as warrior ell Sean. Shows
Friday. 4/29 & Saturday. 4/30 (Tate)
“WORLD MUSIC FILM FEST" (NR)
The UGA Anthropology Student
Organization is sponsoring a night of
world music films. See “Bali: Isle of
Temples.’ and "The Romany Trail:
Gypsy Music in Africa.' A fund-raiser
for tne group* Adopt-a-School pro
gram. Shows Friday. 4/29 (UGA
Ethnobotanical Garden)
XXX: STATE OF THE UNION (PG-13)
Not even my fondness for Vm Diesel
could save the original from boring my
socks off. The sequel* inclusion of
director Lee Tamahori [Die Another Day
) and the excision of the extreme sports
have my spirits up. so long as Ice Cube
does not forget his charisma at the door.
(Anyone remember Anaconda and
Ghosts olMart). Willem Dafoe,
Samuel L Jackson. Scott Speedman
and freakin' Xzibit stand poised to pick
up the Iceman* slack. Opens Friday
(Beechwood. Carmike. Highway 17
Theatres)
