Annie & Her Guns, Biirdie,
Fabulous Bird
Caledonia Lounge
Annie Merkiey moved to Athens In
1998 from Utah, leaving behind a
strict Mormon upbringing to live the
rock and roll lifestyle. After playing
bass in a few bands, including
Cobring Project (which later became 3
O'clock Sandbox) and FableFactory,
she branched out on her own for a
loves truck and lustwom sob project.
"I wanted to write my own songs and
make my own music," says Merktey.
The lineup shifts at times, but it's
solidifying with Meridey on banjo,
guitar and vocals, Daniel Rickard
(Viva, Parker & Lily, Lovers) on key
boards, Trey McManus and Taylor
Coggins (both of Beijing and Fabulous
Bird) on guitar and drums, respectively. Tonight's show also features the return of bngtime
Athens musician Scott Dansby (Hamtramck, Touchy, Le Guano) on bass. Pedal steel player John
Neff (two out of every three bands in town) should also show up for a couple songs.
For the past six months, the crew has been recording Outlaw For Your Love, the Annie & Her
Guns debut album. Rickard, Merkte/s top gun, oversaw production. The album itself, currently
being mastered, displays a variety of styles, from pop to psychedelic rock to unbridled banshee
wailing, and represents tongs Merkiey has written over the past six years.
Most of the album is composed of love songs, or cf songs about being hurt in fove. Merkiey
tends to address conflicting emotions with a naked honesty; who admits that they "try to be
happy" only to sometimes feel it is "all in vain"? On the bubblegum pop number "I Could Be True
to You," Merkiey earnestly declares, "If you really want me to, I could be so true to you." Of the
writing process for Outlaw for Your Love, she confesses, "Love is the most overpowering emotion
in my life. It causes me the most happiness and the most sadness. It is the driving force of my
moods." [Oeirdre Sugiuchi]
