Though he's most commonly refer
enced for replacing Lou Barlow as
Dinosaur J <s bassist there's far more to
Mike Johnson than that Johnson has
proven his abilities as a solo artist as
well as a multi-adaptable sideman.
Originally from the bohemian mecca
of Eugene, OR, Johnson made his first
indie rock ripple with the country
punkers in Snakepit, a band thjt also
included future members of Bikini Kill
and The Melvins. Soon after Snakepit
folded in 1990, Johnson joined up with
Dino following the much-discussed
felling out between Barlow and
frontman J. Masris. Many consider these
to be Dino's declining years, but Green
Mind, Without a Sound and, in partic
ular, Where You Been each had some
thing to offer in their churning base
ment band take on classic album rock.
During the mid-'90s, Johnson released a trio of solo albums. Sadly out of print. Where Am I,
Year of Mondays and I Feel Alright were high water marks of singer-songwriter misery venting.
Johnson's throaty voice, somewhere between Lee Haaewood and Mark Ettzel, and an interesting
fixation with countrypolitan crooner Chartie Rich, enforced the late night confessional vibe of
his songs.
Johnson's strongest work as a sideman can be found in the back catalog of Mark lanegan. He
contributed guitar to each of Lanegan's solo releases, except last year's Bubblegum. Whether it's
the Peckinpah western haze of Whiskey For the Hofy Ghost or the Waits-like dang of Field Songs,
Johnson was integral to the development of Lanegan's soulful, foreboding sound. Johnson's last
solo release was 2002's What Would You Oo, a suitable Ccben-esque companion to his previous
releases. Since then he's maintained an off and on gig as bassist for Caustic Resin and has
recently been assembling another solo endeavor. [Michael Andrews]
