An£ Diaz (Producto) and Rain
Phoenix (Papercranes) have been
playing music together since 1988.
“We both lived in Gainesville,* says
Diaz, "and the night of my very first
show, Rain's band played the club
too. It was only her second show
playing out" Later, the two played r
together in a variety of projects in
the Gainesville, FL. music scene. *
most notably the Causey Way. Diaz
played bass. Phoenix played key
boards, and they both sang backup.
I remember staring slack-jawed at
Diaz, the alluring dark-haired bass
player in her white uniform who
seemed to be having such fun and
laughing with the equally stunning
keyboardist as they played.
Occasionally the girts would break
into song, and I couldn't help wishing they were both fronting projects of their own. Eight years
later and both Diaz and Phoenix are doing just that: Diaz is the driving force of Athens-based
Producto, and Rain (who happens to be the sister of actor Joaquin Phoenix and the late River
Phoenix) and husband Michael Tubbs mala up Papercranes.
Though the two no longer play in the same band, they still arrange to tour together. "I think
that friendships tike ours are rare," explains Diaz, "We reaUy believe so much in each other and
are a support system for one another." 7 ; 7 ..
Producto, whose core ts Diaz and guitarist Frank MacOoneli. is a blend of Latin-influenced
music, partial larty Venezuelan, meshed with rock and pop. For this show. Nick Bielifs on bass and
Allan flurry drums. "There is no set lineup." Are laughs. "If you can ptay just get in the van."
Diaz is enthusiastic about her long-time friend's current project. "It's like Air .vith amazing.
vocals," she says, "I listen to H all the time. I carry her EP around with me. I know I am her ; '
friend, but l don't cany her other projects around in my purse." {Detrdre 7>giuch:]
