Salakida
Stan’s Bar & Grill
After touring ex
tensively with groups
like Blackalicious and
Pharcyde, California
transplant Salakida Kali
now calls Atlanta the
homebase from which she
sends out positive vibes.
Tve been in Atlanta
since October of 2003,"
says Kali, "so this is my
third year, and I love it.
I'm Oakland to the heart,
but Atlanta—and par-
Salakida
ticulariy the artists' community here—has totally won me over. I don't see myself ever leav
ing permanently." Her combination of sultry vocals and easy-going, acoustic neo-soul on last
year's album Safakido merits comparison to acts like India.Arie or Jaguar Wright.
Kali is also one half of Stone Mecca, a more uptempo project that sees her collaborating
with Los Angeles artist Tra4 James. "The Stone Mecca project is a hybrid that features songs
that I wrote," says Kali, "along with songs that feature me and the male vocalist and producer
Tra6 on songs we wrote together or that he wrote." On the strength of some early demos and
Kali's independent release, the Wu-Tang Clan's label Wu-Music Group/ Universal signed Stone
Mecca, and a full album is expected later this summer. Kali says tonight's show will highlight
her solo work, as well as some of the Stone Mecca material
Though Kali is the only musical act on tonight's Baxter Street bill a number of comedians
will also perform. It's all called "Volume One" of the Georgia Comedy & Music Experience, a
new enterprise looking to feature, unsurprisingly, regional comedy and music. Rising stand-up
comedians Drew Thomas and Byron Bowers—and several other Georgia acts—will perform sets,
and free mix CDs and other prize-type stuff will be available for the first 200 folks wik> show
up. Advance tickets are only SlO and the show starts at 9 p.m. Call Stan's Bar & Grill at 706-
227-2102 for more info. [Chris Hassiotis]
