Wrinkle Neck
Mules
Flicker Theatre & Bar
Virginia's Wrinkle Neck
Mules have been sharpen
ing their funky brand of dirt
road, Americana country/
rock for the past seven years;
with their gleefully eclectic
song book often sung with
purposely bent voices, the
quintet of Andy Stepanian
(vocals, guitar, mandolin).
Mason Brent (vocals, guitar, mandolin, pedal steel), Brian Gregory (vocals, bass), Stuart
Gunter (drums) and Chase Heard (vocals, guitar, banjo) could sometimes pass for like-minded •
Austin genre-stompers The Gourds in a blindfold test With three singers and plenty of hol
lered vocal harmonies, the comparison is valid, though the Mules are packing some swift tricks
of their own.
The band just released a new album called Pull the Brake (Shut Eye), its first long-player
since 200?s Minor Enough. With bluegrass twang, steady harmonies and salty stories to spare,
the band strikes an enjoyable balance between the honky-tonk and the church house. The
reverb guitars sputter and wobble all over the place and Gunter's steady backbeat is as pro
pulsive as an old, broken-in Mack truck. Songs like 'Sugar and Sunshine' and 'Mecklenburg
County* do the aforementioned Gourds-style thing, while 'Put Your Guitars Where Your Mouth
Is' harkens back to the late-'70s glory days of the Charlie Daniels Band. There's also a surprise
appearance from unsettling indie-folk manchild WilWJldham, who puts in guest vocals on the
more subdued 'Lowlight.'
The Mules are going to be pulling their weight across the States all summer long. After that
they plan to wrap up a new batch of songs scheduled for release in earty '07. For now, the selec
tions from Pull the Broke and Minor Enough make a pretty good soundtrack for those steamy sum
mer nights best accompanied by cheap beer and cheaper company. Pull the brake? Helt these*
guys would keep hauling ass even with the emergency brake yanked tight (Michael AndrewsJ
