Caledonia Lounge
The girl from Asheville who
made Athens her home and
has set many a show aglow
with her bold bluesy vocals
and spirited smile is as busy as
ever this spring. Betsy Franck
is either playing solo or fulfill
ing her raison d'etre of apply
ing her generous vocal capacity
to a range of musical styles Betsy Franck
revolving around blues, soul,
Americana, honky tonk and even gospel genres with a multitude of positively-attuned revolv
ing players.
Usually those players fall under the auspices of the Bare Knuckle Band, but for a series of
upcoming shows, that group is being distilled down to a trio comprising Franck and local old-
school guitar gurus Matt “Pistol* Stoessel and Thomas 'TK* Kay, a combination which Frandc
says will give her a chance to amp up the honky-tonk vibe she loves so much. Franck expects
that the trio will back each other in a round-robin collaborative affair at Wednesday's 8:30
p.m. Bicker show, as all three are strong singer-songwriters in their own right Ricker's inti
mate confines should only help this strong dynamic. Franck also opens the next night at the
Caledonia Lounge, playing before The Ones and Aqualove's Tim Conley.
In other news, Franck, Brie Friesland and Josh Gibbs—some of the original Bare Knuckle
boys—have been playing under the moniker The Swamp Horse Family Band. They recently audi
tioned and recorded for a CMT pilot titled “Opening Act* documenting the search for performers
to share some of the limelight being focused on Top 40 country idol Sara Evans. The pilot was
shot in Asheville and should air this summer, so keep your ears and eyes peeled. [Ben Gerrard]
