ALLISON WEISS & THE BANDITS
(Tasty World) Allison Weiss set up
shop in Athens in 2005 and dove into
the open-mic scene, delivering catchy,
emotion-driven acoustic guitar songs
which pull from both mid-’90s ladyrock
and mere recent acoustic emo like
Dashboard Confessional. Her debut re
lease An Eight Song Tribute to Feeling
Bed & Feeling Better is out now, and
tonight she debuts her three-piece
backing band.
BLOODKIN & FRIENDS (Melting
Point) The long-running Athens rock
and roll quartet plays a bluesy style of
roots-rock music with big guitars and
sharply written lyrics. Daniel Hutchens
and Eric Carter are the songwriting
backbone, slinging out darkly countri
fied barroom rock. Last Night Out is
2005 s most recent full-band album;
Hutchens earlier this year wrapped an
acoustic tour of the Northwest with
Eric Martinez and has a great new
acoustic album out called Love Songs
For Losers
THE FERVOR (Go Bar) Kentucky band
The Fervor recently trimmed down to a
three-piece—Natalie Felker, Ben Felker
and Mat Herron—but still plays the
lush, heartfelt and driving pop found

his debut album The Absent Parade
MATIAS (Tasty World) The new local
duo of Nicole Matias and Seth Alan
Bolton combine acoustic aid electric

Hansen, Michael Steele and Mike
Hines—longtime Athenian Randall
Bramblett presents a simplified slab
of Southern music. Either blowing the
sax or delivering his gruffn’grumbly
vocals. Bramblett can tosses out direct
Southern R&B kickers. Rich Some Day,
his most recent disc, was released last
July on New West Records.
RUSSIAN SPY CAMERA (Go Bar)
Ryan White (guitar, vocals) and Andy
Turner (drums, vocals) last year
recruited musician McGregor Button,
drawing in influences from rock, hip-

“Covers to Fight Cancer”
40 Watt Club
Benefit and event season in
Athens comes 'round every spring,
with nice weather spurring your
Boybutantes, your Twilights, your
Hot Comer Festivals, your Ampses
for Stampses, among others. April
in particular piles the plate high as
organizers scramble to capitalize on
students still in town, and those ea
ger to raise money for worthy causes
often have to work triple-time and come up with unique ideas to draw attention to their
events. So it is with "Covers to Fight Cancer," a benefit concert organized by Steve LaBate, a
musician, former Athenian, sometime Bearfoot Hooker and current associate editor at Paste
magazine in Decatur.
"My uncle Anthony Lucido passed away last year due to complications from pancreatic
cancer," says LaBate. "For my birthday this year, I wanted to do something in his honor. So
I decided to put this benefit together. The event itself doubles as my birthday party, so even
though this is for a serious cause, it's gonna be a party."
The event will feature a huge number of Athens and Atlanta bands each performing three
cover songs, with the night culminating in a collaborative surprise jam. What bands? Look
for Southern BHxh, Venice Is Sinking, Hope For Agoldensummer, Warm In the Wake, The
Bearfoot Hookers, The Vinyl Strangers, Summer Hymns' Zachary Gresham, Ken Will Morton,
Attractive Eighties Women, Andrew Nelson, Gutshot & Thirsty, Steve LaBate & the Fears of
Commitment and others to be announced. Each artist will play songs by at least three different
artists, and some of the expected tunes come courtesy of Bob Dylan, The Traveling Wilburys,
Morphine, The Minutemen, The Misfits, Dolly Parton, The Pixies, The Beatles, Stones... even
songs from the likes of Neutral Milk Hotel and Masters of the Hemisphere may pop in. Tickets
cost $10, with all proceeds going to the American Cancer Society. [Chris Hassiotis]
and covers from Athenian singer-song
writer Sean Armgton, formerly of tends
Big Atomic and One Big Eye.
PATRICK CAREY (Flicker) Patrick
Carey's slow-rolling countryish pop is
marked by breezy, melodic sounds with
chiming acoustic and electric sounds
and vocal melodies. Expect to hear
some songs off Edible Orchids, the
upcoming release from his band The
Ginger Envelope, as well as some non
band tunes. 8:30 p.m.
