Still, Small Voice & the
Joyful Noise, Commander
Chameleon, The Shut-Ups
Tasty World
Local songwriter Chip McKenzie,
who fronts the band Still, Small
Voice & the Joyful Noise, has made
no secret of past troubles, tackling
issues of alcoholism and existential
malaise in the lyrics of his spirited
garage-rock laments. With his new
solo release Car Crash on Yr Couch, a
collection of old recordings just now
released on the ECRuins label, he
resurrects some of those not-so-clos-
eted skeletons.
"Well, these songs have been
floating around for a while now,"
says McKenzie. "They're basically
culled from three or four different
sources over the period of time when Chip McKenzie
I was really at my worst with the
drinking and also a track or two from right after I crashed out at rehab and started to clean
myself up." The tunes are starker than those found on the full band's 2006 debut EP With Love
for Our Enemies, and sport a somber, atmospheric tone that should resemble that of Califone
and other lo-fi rustic indie-rock outfits.
Why drop the album now? "I wanted to make sure that once the whole thing was put
together, it was just as honest and straightforward as it could possibly be," says McKenzie.
"I didn't want any glamour or bullshit or excuses for my own bad behavior or anything that
might possibly be interpreted in that way." The liner notes include contributions from band-
mate Trish Scurry, Elf Power frontman Andrew Rieger and label head/ local rapper Rorshak, all
three of whom were involved in one way or another with the recordings over the years.
McKenzie also hints that the full band may perform these intimate tunes at upcoming
performances. "I can't wait to hear how the gang fleshes out these old skeletons," he says.
"There's a lot of room for them to do some really interesting work in there!" (Chris Hassiotis]
