ARCTIC TALE (G) Pretty pictures,
obnoxious anthropomorphization
Growing up in a warming world, a
walrus and a polar bear face many
'hallenges Armed with an obvious
agenda. filmmakers Adam Ravetch and
Safth Robertson take the idea of an olrt
Disney nature film - animal actions are
ascribed to very human motives - and
make an infinitely less convincing
global warming tract than Al Gore’s An
Inconvenient Truth. Were Arctic Tale
chronicling the life cycle of that frozen
wild - like March of the Penguins -
rather than positing that walrus Seala
and polar bear Nanoo's quality of life is
deteriorating by our human standards,
I might have warmed up to the movie
(Beechwood)
BECOMING JANE (PG) Jane Austen
spent the majority of her short life
in obscurity, bored out of her mind,
financially dependent on family
members Her nearest brush with ro
mance was a short flirtation with Tom
LeFroy, an Irish lawyer who visited
her neighborhood briefly during the
winter she turned 21 Becoming Jane
has retrofitted Austen's prospects with
a dewy complexion (Anne Hathaway),
a dangerous, seriously dishy Tom
LeFroy (James McAvoy) and the brave
decision to have a go at living “by the
pen.” rather than accepting any one
of several substandard matrimonial
proposals tossed her way Despite
the mystifying decision to cast an
American as Austen, the chemistry be
tween Hathaway and McAvoy is engag
ing, the supporting cast is strong, and
the cinematography pleasing. (Jesslyn
Shields) (Beechwood)
THE BOURNE ULTIMATUM (PG-13)
Director Paul Greengrass returns with
VOTE REPUBLICAN'
a third entry that elevates the series'
threat level to midnight Shot and ed
ited at a breakneck pace, with handheld
cameras capturing the frenetic action,
Ultimatum is bursting with brutal
beatings, deadly double crosses and
revelations about Bourne’s past. Matt
Damon again whoops ass while still
nailing Bourne's conflict with his inner
killer. (Beechwood. Carmike)
DADDY DAY CAMP (PG) This sequel
to the Daddy Day Care replaces Eddie
Murphy with Cuba Gooding, Jr as
childcare provider Charlie Hinton
When Charlie and buddy Phil (Paul
Rae) branch into day camp, they dis
cover they know less about running
a camp than they do a day care Pure

EDWARD SCISSORHANDS (FG-13)
1990 Cited by many as Tim Burton's
greatest cinematic achievement,
Edward Scissorhands is a lovely tribute
to Vincent Price and James Whale
The blend of Johnny Depp's moving
portrayal of the sad “monster’ and
Danny Elfman's lyrical score enable the
visionary filmmaker to construct his
most humanly fantastic film. Shows

THE INVASION (R) The fourth adap
tation of Jack Finney's Body Snatchers
adds little to the premise of alien
takeover by a pod-borne collective
consciousness. Washington psychia
trist Carol Bennell (Nicole Kidman)
must escape detection and conversion
by an alien species long enough to get
her son Oliver (Jackson Bond), human
ity’s last hope, to the ever-trustworthy
government. A superbly murky politi
cal/ moral quandary - is world peace
worth total submission to a dominant
extraterrestrial intelligence? - is sub
sumed by the unnecessary car chases
and mushy, non-linear editing provided
by the Wachowski Brothers, brought in
to assist director Oliver Hirschbiegel
when his first cut didn’t wow the mon-
eymen.The unshakable horror/ political
allegory is snatched by something far
more insidious, an action-addicted
producer seeking increased marketabil
ity (Beechwood, Carmike)

THE LAST LEGIQN (PG-13) Based
on the novel of the same name, this
fantasy adventure film starring Colin
Firth is set in the waning days of the
Roman Empire It follows 12-year-old
Romulus Augustus (Thomas Sangster.
Love. Actually)as he escapes captivity
and travels to Britannia is search of
fhe last Roman legion so he may fight
for Rome But what good is a sword-
fightmg movie without any bloodshed 9
The action scenes show little gore or
actual violence, so it's sate to take the
older kids to this one, but they would
probably be bored out of their minds
It seems like the movie was shot as a
serious epic, then re-cut to be a movie
for tweens but then they realized how
boring it was and tried to market it
to an older audience The plot is as
predictable and boring as the dialogue
The love story subplot is painful and
terrible special effects make it difficult
to sit through this one. If you were
hoping for a live-action Sword and
the Stone, you will be sorely disap
pointed. The Last Legion offers nothing
impressive, and would most likely be
a waste of your time. Did we mention
it was boring? (Alex Moore & Lena
Trotochaud] (Carmike)
