Despite Athens' international
acclaim as a music town, we don't
get too many touring acts from
beyond our nation's borders. It's
probably an economic thing, as
that kind of travel's expensive
enough as it is without factoring
in Athens' notoriously fickle show
attendance. A little-known tour
ing band's lucky to draw 20 or 30
people and admission—and there
fore, a band's potential pay—-is
significantly lower than in other
towns.
Come on out, then, Athens, to
check out Extra Golden, a band
that got its start as an intercon- Extra Golden
tinental collaboration between
musicians from both Kenya and the U.S. The band is touring in support of Hera Ma Nono,
its second album, and stops in at the Caledonia this week. The album was recorded while
the band was on tour in 2006—the first American tour for the Kenyan members of the
band—and features a vibrant corfibination of East African benga guitar tunes and group
vocals in both English and Luo. Although original singer and cofounder Otieno Jagwasi
passed away in 2005, the band carried on with a lineup that now includes five singers,
as well as three guitarists.
The benga style developed in Nairobi in the 1940s and '50s, and although it's heavy
on indigenous rhythms and melodies, it also borrows heavily from American styles, par
ticularly from Cuban jazz, and other folk songs. Hera Ma Nono is a follow-up to 2005's
Ok-Oyot System, the band's debut album which was recorded more or less live over one
night of playing. Extra Golden's current tour brings the band to the American South for
the first time, a region rich enough in its own folk traditions, but not so rich it can't
make time to welcome something new from other parts of the world. [Chris Hassiotis]
