L eroy Maxwell started as a
co-op at Savannah
Electric which led to a 30
year career at Savannah Electric
and Power Company (SEPCO),
now Georgia Power. He started
in the engineering department,
utilizing his degree from
Savannah Technical Institute in
Construction Engineering, and
ended his career in the Results
Lab Department. During
Maxwell's career at Georgia
Power, he saw the industry

Futures Authority to host
Community Summit
Summit VIII featuring Keith Brown as
Keynote Speaker
The Chatham-Savannah Youth
Futures Authority is convening the
Eighth Annual Community Summit.
The theme of this year’s summit is
“Building Community Results
through Collaboration. ” The objec
tive of the Community Summit is to
strengthen and expand partnership
efforts in developing and executing
action plans that address the issues
facing our children, youth and their
families. The summit will take place
on September 25-26, 2008, at the
Savannah Civic Center Ballroom.
The keynote speaker for the
opening session at 6:00pm on
Thursday, September 25th, is Mr.
Keith L. Brown—known as the
“Motivator of the Millennium”. Mr.
Brown is a native of Savannah and

has a gift of relating to and inspiring

The First City Classic is a
two-day cultural festival in
which musicians, restaurants,
government offices, corpora
tions, healthcare professionals,
entrepreneurs and educators will
welcome an estimated 70,000
visitors to showcase the best of
what Savannah has to offer. The
event is dedicated to presenting
the tools for building strong
communities and will bring
together communities through
out the Coastal Empire for a
variety of engaging educational
opportunities and family-orient
ed entertainment.
The First City Classic will
kick off Friday, September 12,
11 a.m. with the First City Taste,
a gathering of dozens of local
restaurants offering a broad
selection of local cuisine, and
concerts in the Park, a diverse
schedule of performers including
jazz, pop, gospel and R&B. The
Concerts in the Park will culmi
nate Friday evening with a per
formance by an internationally
known surprise guest. Tickets
for the First City Taste are avail
able from several local non-prof
its including the local Red Cross,
All Walks of Life (AWOL), A
Working Woman In Need
(AW WIN), CASA, the
Greenbriar Children’s Center,
Habitat for Humanity, Boy
Scouts, Hope House, the
Wesley Community Center, the
Savannah Association for the
Blind, the May St. YMCA and
others. A portion of ticket sales
will benefit each non-profit.
During the afternoon, the
First City Classic will offer a
Business Showcase while the
Concerts in the Park continue
through the evening. The
Business Showcase will include
dozens of exhibitors ranging
from businesses to governmen
tal agencies and non-profit
organizations offering citizens
and consumers a way to learn
more about their community.
Included in the Business
Showcase will be the Healthy
Living Fair highlighting fun and
easy ways to lead a healthier
lifestyle such as the benefits of
good nutrition and regular exer
cise. The Healthy Living Fair
will offer free screenings for
high blood pressure and several
other health indicators as well
as information about disease
prevention.

The King-Tisdell Cottage
Foundation, Inc. (KTCF) announces
that acclaimed local vocalists Huxsie
Scott, Lori J. Lewis and Mario
Bennett, will salute the musical and
movie “Dreamgirls,” in performanc
es during the eleventh annual Awards
Banquet, which will be held on
Saturday, September 27, 2008, at
7:30 p.m. in the Hyatt Regency
Savannah. A reception will precede
the banquet at 6:30 p.m. At the
awards banquet, five awards are
given annually to individuals, whose
work has been significant in affect
ing progress, promoting human dig
nity and positively impacting either
the city of Savannah, Chatham
County, Georgia or the nation.
Classically trained vocalist, Juanita
Tucker, will also open the program
with the national anthem. In recent
years, the caliber of the entertain
ment during the banquet has contin
ued to increase - with last year's ban
quet featuring a show-stopping
selection from the musical, “Rent,”
and solo performances by
“American Idol” talent, Stephanie
Edwards.
Dreamgirls is a 2006 musical
film, jointly produced and released
by DreamWorks Pictures and
Paramount Pictures, which starred
Jamie Foxx, Beyonce Knowles,
Eddie Murphy and Jennifer Hudson.
Dreamgirls won three Golden Globe
awards in 2007, including Best
Picture, and won two Oscars at the
2007 Academy Awards. A period
piece set in the 1960s and 1970s
with a primarily African-American
cast, Dreamgirls is adapted from the
1981 Broadway musical of the same
name. The musical was based on the
history and evolution of American
R&B music during the eras of doo
wop, soul, the Motown Sound, funk,
and disco. In addition, the stage
musical and the movie contain sev
eral allusions to the lives and careers
of Motown Records act, The
Supremes
Huxsie Scott, a Savannah
native, is often regarded as one of
the greatest jazz/blues artists in the
Savannah area. She began her career
as a jazz vocalist in 1973 and per-
