Vote on November 4 and Make History
A lmost two (2) years ago, when Illinois Senator
Barack Obama began his candidacy for presi
dent of the United States, few of our readers,
if any, actually thought he could win. Of course, our
readers are not alone on this score.
Now, with only one week before election day, we
can clearly see a path for the election of Barack
Obama as the 44th President of the United States of
America. An Obama victory will obviously be his
toric because of his race, but of equal consequence, it
could signal an historic shift of attitudes and policies
for our nation.
Barack Obama is clearly the best qualified candi
date for President. He has the calm demeanor, intelli
gence and leadership ability that we need to steer us
out of our current state of economic turmoil, two (2)
wars, and rapidly declining international prestige.
For his Vice Presidential running mate, Obama
selected his fellow Senator, Joe Biden of Delaware, an
experienced statesman with deep foreign policy expe
rience who would clearly be able to step in as
President, if needed. Biden could be a real contributor
in the policy-making process.
By contrast, Obama's opponent, Senator John
McCain selected Alaska Governor Sarah Palin as his
running mate. During the past two (2) months,
Governor Palin has demonstrated a total lack of
knowledge of national and international affairs, and
has persisted in repeating a few pat responses to all
questions. According to most of the national polls, a
majority of Americans believe that she is clearly not
ready to assume the presidency. Her selection as the
Republican Vice Presidential nominee calls into ques
tion Senator McCain's ability to make good and rea

sonable choices.
Senator McCain and Governor Palin's pandering
to the far right wing of the Republican Party leads us
to conclude that if they were elected we would be in
for four (4) more years of the failed policies that have
ruined our national economy and our prestige through
out the world.
These are desparate and trying times that cry out
for new vision, new direction and new leadership.
Barack Obama is the man for these times. He appeals
to the enlightened and better part of our national spir
it, and he has promoted inclusiveness and encouraged
us to unite as Americans. If his historic campaign fore
tells the future, he will be able to use his charisma,
calm, and toughness to help our nation navigate the
stormy seas ahead and put us back on course.
Throughout the Democratic Primary and the General
Election, Obama has been rock solid and unshakable.
He has patiently and skillfully overcome every vicious
attack. More importantly, Obama has energized
Americans of all walks of life to get involved in the
process and to pay attention to their government. If
we are to recover as a nation, it will be because ordi
nary citizens take back control of their government
from entrenched special interests.
America is still the greatest power on earth, and
we must choose to use our might as a force for good at
home and abroad. The world is waiting for America to
live up to its promises of equality, opportunity and jus
tice for all. Barack Obama is clearly the man to lead
us during these trying times.
IT IS OBAMA TIME! IT IS TIME FOR US TO
VOTE AND MAKE HISTORY.
Jim Martin Would
Be A Great Senator
Jim Martin
Jim Martin is a
Democrat who was elected
to the Georgia House of
Representatives in 1983, and
served in the legislature for
18 years. During his time in
the State Legislature, Martin
became a leader on health
care issues and helped to
create PeachCare, which
provides affordable health
care to thousands of
Georgia's children.
Jim Martin served as
chairman of the House
Judiciary Committee, Ethics
Committee, and a subcom
mittee of the Appropriations
Committee overseeing State
health care programs. He
was also an active member
of the Industrial Relations,
Special Judiciary, and
Children and Youth
Committees. Martin is cred
ited with saving State fund
ing for programs that provid
ed critical services for sen
iors, children, and people
with disabilities in the early
1990s when the State was
facing budget cuts due to
tough economic times.
Two governors selected
Martin to lead the Georgia
Department of Human
Resources. He took over the
department in 2001, when
Georgia was facing difficult
economic times and success
fully cut spending while pre
serving important programs.
Jim Martin has a history
of getting things done and
fighting for citizens who do
not have the resources to
fight for themselves. Clearly,
Martin is the right man for

EDITOR'S NOTE:
We Must Vote To
Move Forward
The Savannah Tribune has a proud and glorious
heritage. Our history dates back to 1875, when three
African-American civic and business leaders recog
nized the need for a newspaper dedicated to serving the
African-American community. We have always been in
the forefront of positive efforts to move our people in a
direction that benefits us, as well as the overall commu
nity. Therefore, this edition of The Savannah Tribune
is a crucial part of our efforts to frilfill our mission. We
want to encourage our readers to participate in EARLY
VOTING through October 31st, or to go to the polls
and VOTE on November 4th. No one should miss this
opportunity to be a part of history. Therefore, we are
strongly urging our readers to exercise their rights and
fulfill a civic responsibility. By voting, we honor the
sacrifices and struggles encountered by our ancestors,
and the many soldiers of the Civil Rights Movement
who made it possible for all of us to cast a ballot and let
our voices be heard.
In addition to urging our readers to vote in the his
toric General Election on November 4th, this newspa
per is also our 2008 Savannah State University
Homecoming Edition. Annual Homecomings at SSU
are a grand tradition. This is a time for alumni and
friends to return to Savannah and the campus to meet
the students, faculty, administration and staff, catch up
on new developments, renew old friendships, and recall
the “Good Old Days.” With this edition of The
Tribune, we are continuing our proud tradition of salut
ing Savannah State University during Homecoming.
John Barrow Has
Earned Our Support
The Savannah Tribune
has consistently supported
John Barrow in his bid to rep
resent our area in Congress.
We stood with him in 2004
during his first campaign and
helped introduce him to the
voters in our area because at
that time we were certain that
John Barrow had the poten
tial to be a great leader, not
only for the 12 th
Congressional District, but
also for our nation. Barrow is
an intelligent, articulate attor
ney, who has demonstrated
that our original assessment
was correct. In addition to
effectively representing our
District in Washington, he
has kept his original promise
to be one of our area’s most
accessible elected officials.
He has hosted over 100 town
hall meetings and public
forums all across the 12th
District during this Congress
alone. He has held tax and
mortgage assistance work
shops, Energy, Education,
and Economic Development
Summits, Rural Town Hall
Tours, Veterans Town Hall
Tours, Health Care Tours,
John Barrow
and his “Congress on the
Comer.”
The 12th Congressional
District is a sprawling territo
ry that stretches from
Savannah to Milledgeville,
Augusta to Uvalda,
Crawfordville to Glennville,
and covers 22 counties and
10,000 square miles. A good
representative for this area
must understand the chal
lenges facing farm families as
well as those that confront
