Local Black Attorneys Endorse Judge Perry Brannen
as the Savannah Bar Association Releases Judicial Qualification Poll Results
Judge Perry Brannen
Local African-American
Attorneys and community
leaders Sage Brown and
Diane Morrell McCleod have
endorsed Superior Court
Judge Perry Brannen's re-
election bid. Attorney Brown
said that under Judge
Brannen's supervision, the
Superior Court treats all citi
zens with dignity and respect.
Attorney Diane Morrell
McCleod added: “Under
Chief Judge Perry Brannen's
leadership, the Chatham
County Superior Court is a
respected model for other
Superior Courts in Georgia.”
Additionally, last week,
the Savannah Bar Association
released the results of its
Judicial Qualifications Poll
for the contested November
4, 2008 Chatham County
Superior Court race between
Judge Brannen and Attorney
Gwendolyn Fortson Waring.
Judge Brannen was con
sidered “Well Qualified” or
“Qualified” by 340 of the 348
responders, and only 36 of the
local lawyers who participat
ed in the poll said that Waring
is “Well Qualified” or
“Qualified.” Additionally,
203 of the 348 lawyers said

that Waring was “Not
Qualified” and only four (4)
local lawyers considered
Brannen “Not Qualified.”
The other ballots cast
during the poll fell in the cat

Knowledge to Express
Opinion” and those who “Did
Not Vote.” Four (4) of the
attorneys who participated in
the poll said that they lacked
“Sufficient Knowledge to
Express an Opinion” or “Did
Not Vote” on Brannen, and
109 gave these responses
regarding Waring.
The Chatham County
Superior Court Judge race is a
nonpartisan election.
Vote to Make Your
Ancestors Proud
United States.
We don’t only have a
right to vote on Tuesday, we
have an obligation. No one is
asking us to submit to police
dogs or fire hoses on Election
Day. No one is proposing that
we risk our lives, which was
the case just 50 years ago as
African-Americans pursued
their constitutional rights. All
we’re expected to do is what
those who went before us can’t
possible do - we’re expected
to vote.
When I approach the vot
ing machine on Tuesday, it
will be with a great sense of
pride, knowing that I will be
doing something that would
make my deceased relatives
proud. While this will not be
the end of the civil rights
movement - as some right
wingers like to proclaim - it is
an important step toward racial
equality that has eluded the
United States since its found
ing.
I must confess that I
never thought I’d live to see
this day. That’s not being pes
simistic, that’s being realistic.
