“CNN Heroes” Event
Honors Savannah
Resident David Puckett
Mayor Otis Johnson and
state Sen. Eric Johnson hon
ored Savannah resident David
Puckett on Nov. 18 in antici
pation of “CNN Heroes: An
All-Star Tribute,” launched
last year to spotlight ordinary
citizens accomplishing
extraordinary deeds, and air
ing on Thanksgiving, Nov.
27, at 9 p.m. (ET/PT). Puckett
was named a CNN HEROES
honoree last month for his
work to provide free artificial
limbs, braces and care to peo
ple in rural southeastern
Mexico. He was awarded
$25,000. Hosted by CNN
anchor Anderson Cooper
from the Kodak Theatre in
Hollywood, CNN HEROES:
AN ALL-STAR TRIBUTE
will air globally on CNN,
CNN International and CNN
en Espanol.
This year's Top 10 CNN
Heroes, as selected by the
Blue Ribbon Panel, were
unveiled by Cooper on
CNN's American Morning
last month. The public select
ed the “CNN Hero of the
Year” Liz McCartney, via
voting at the CNN Heroes
site.
David Puckett first con
nected with the Yucatan peo
ple of southeastern Mexico
while volunteering on a mis
sion there as a teenager.
Struck by the overwhelming
poverty and the physical chal
lenges he saw people facing
David Puckett
in the rural communities, he
vowed to return and make a
difference there. After enter
ing the field of orthotics and
prosthetics, Puckett saw his
opportunity to help improve
the lives of people in the
Yucatan. His nonprofit, PIPO
Missions: Limbs and Braces
to Mexico, collects donated,
used orthopedic braces and
artificial limbs in the United
States and crafts new ones
from their recycled compo
nents. On average, Puckett
makes a six-day trip every
two months to distribute the
custom prosthetics and
braces, while also providing
ongoing care. Over the course
of his 41 trips to the region,
Puckett has helped more than
420 individuals - and that
number continues to grow.
He's found that word of his
work spreads fast through the
villages and people will drive
hours to attend his clinics.

An academic visionary,

Jim Martin
ment his economic plan, and
Jim Martin is a man who will
keep his word. We urge our
readers vote early, or to go to
the polls on December 2, and
help elect Jim Martin.
Our support of Jim
Martin is not new. We
endorsed him in a front
page editorial in our
October 29 edition, and we
are restating much of that
endorsement below.
Jim Martin was elected
to the Georgia House of
Representatives in 1983, and
served in the legislature for
18 years. During his time in
the State Legislature, Martin
became a leader on health
care issues and helped to cre
ate PeachCare, which pro
vides affordable health care
to thousands of Georgia's
children.
Martin served as chair
man of the House Judiciary
Committee, Ethics
Committee, and a subcom
mittee of the Appropriations
Committee overseeing State
health care programs. He
was also an active member
of the Industrial Relations,
Special Judiciary, and
Children and Youth
Committees. Martin is cred
ited with saving State fund

iors, children, and people
with disabilities in the early
1990s when the State was

tough economic times.
Two governors selected
Martin to lead the Georgia
Department of Human
Resources. He took over the
department in 2001, when
the Georgia was facing diffi
cult economic times and suc
cessfully cut spending while
preserving important pro
grams.
Jim Martin has a histo
ry of getting things done and
fighting for citizens who do
not have the resources to
fight for themselves. Clearly,
Martin is the right man for
Georgia during these tough
economic times. His oppo
nent voted with President
George Bush, and in favor of
his failed economic policies,
over 90 percent of the time.
Martin attended the
Atlanta Public Schools and
earned three degrees (a bach
elor's degree and two law
degrees) at the University of
Georgia. He is a Vietnam
Veteran who says that the
Bush Administration's fail
ure to provide adequate care
for our returning soldiers and
their families is nothing short
of disgraceful.
We, at The Savannah
Tribune, believe that the
people of Georgia could use
a different kind of senator.
We need a senator who
shares our concern for the
wellbeing of all people...not
just the rich. We urge you to
vote to elect Jim Martin.
