Haliburton Named
VP for University
Advancement at

Haliburton as vice presi
dent for University
Advancement effective
March 2.
As vice president
and a member of the
president’s leadership
team, Haliburton will
direct all university pro
grams related to
fundraising and oversee
the areas of alumni
affairs, communications
and development.
“Increasing partner
ships that will yield
more external support
for the university is one
of my major goals,”
Yarbrough said.
“Ms. Haliburton’s
demonstrated knowl
edge, experience and
enthusiasm for fundrais
ing will enhance our
overall efforts in image
building and fund culti
vation.”
Haliburton brings to
Savannah State approxi
mately 27 years of expe
rience in the non-profit,
for-profit and govern
ment sectors.
Prior to coming to
Savannah State, she
served as assistant vice
president for
Development at Virginia
State University (VSU)
in Petersburg, Va.
She joined VSU in
2003 as director of
Development and was
promoted to assistant
vice president within two
years.
There, she was responsi
ble for significant
fundraising-related
events including the
125th Anniversary
Celebration, the
President’s 10th
Anniversary Gala, Tom
Joyner Foundation
HBCU School of the
Month and the Art in
Petersburg Dual
Initiative.
Under Haliburton’s
leadership, funds raised
at VSU increased by
approximately 235%
over a five-year period
while alumni giving
increased by approxi
mately 135% during the
period.
Haliburton received
the Bachelor of Arts
degree in
Communications at the
University of Maryland
at College Park in 1982.
She completed
requirements for the
Certificate in Fund
Raising Management at
the Indiana University
School of Philanthropy
in Indianapolis, Ind., in
2006, and is a candidate
for professional certifi
cation by Certified Fund
Raising Executive
International.
100 Black Men Honor
Dr. David Satcher at Benefit Gala

The 100 Black Men of
Savannah, Inc. held its
annnual Fundraising Benefit
Gala on Saturday, April 4 at
the Hyatt Regency
Savannah. Members
welcomed Dr. David Satcher
who served as keynote
speaker for the event.
The gala is designed to
raise funds to support schol
arships for students involved
in the 100’s Feadership
Mentoring Academy.
Upon graduation from
high school, students are
presented with funds to help
them in the pursuit of higher
education.
Satcher shared his
wealth of knowledge con
cerning health disparities
that plaque the African
American community.
“ Feadership in public
health is to critical to leave
to chance”, Satcher told an
attentive, capacity-filled
audience. Satcher went on

to say, “Families ought to do more than
eat together; let’s be physically active”.
Satcher is probably best remem
bered as having served as the 16th
Surgeon General of the United States, a
position he assumed in 1998.
He also served as Assistant
Secretary for Health in the Department
of Health and Human Services from
1998-2001, making him only the sec
ond person in history to have held both
positions simultaneously.
Satcher currently serves as the
director of the Satcher Health and
Leadership Institute and Center of
Excellence on Health Disparities.
Satcher was presented with a
Lifetime Achievement Award for his
work in the field of Health Disparities.
Other awards presented included:
Excellence in Mentoring-Chef Joe
Randall; Excellence in Education-Dr.
Leroy “Zke” Zimmerman; Excellence
in Health and Wellness-Dr. Diane
Weems; and Excellence in Economic
Development-Ron Thompson, Sav 21.
Books, Brownies and Berries at
Wesley Community Centers
On Thursday, April 2,
Wesley Community Centers,
Inc., and the Rotary Club of
Savannah presented Books,
Berries, and Brownies, a fun
literary event in which local
celebrities came in and read
to the children.
Special guest readers
included Mayor Otis
Johnson, Ph.D, Dr. Thomas
Lockamy, School
Superintendent, and Kim
Gusby of WSAV.
The Savannah
Tribune’s own Tanya Y.
Milton, Vice-President and
Adverrtising Director, also
took time to read for the chil
dren.
