Woodville Tompkins Hall of Fame
Accepting Applications
The Woodville-Tompkins
High Hall of Fame will be
accepting applications for
induction into the hall of
fame through April 30, 2009.
Eligible candidates include
athletes or coaches who
played or coached at
Woodville or Tompkins
prior to 1986.

Church where the Rev. Dr.
John Foster is Senior Pastor,
celebrated its annual Loyalty
Day.
The service was hosted
by Sis. Swannie M. Richards,
(the Loyalty Day
Chairperson) and her com
mittee; Sisters Vanessa
Lowman, Dorothy Ogden,
Queen Thomas, Judy Wilson,
Betty Mitchell, Brother
David Richards, and Greg
Linton.
They chose as their
theme: "Re-Evaluate Your
Blessings from God ... Focus
on the Three T's!!! Time,
Talent, and Tithes,"
Sis. Richards acknowl
edged her appreciation for
all persons who did not
serve on the committee but
parricipated in this month’s
Loyally Moment each
Sunday Morning; expressing
why they give back to the
Lord and their church in the
form of their time, talents,
and tithes.
They were Sisters Ama
Cooper, Diann Scott, Paula
Council, Evelyn Moffitt,
Margaret Allen, Tena Butler,
Erica Green, Elois
Burroughs, Evelyn Brown,

The church’s Class
Leaders Ministry was recog
nized by Sisters Richards and
Thomas with the presentation
of roses to class leaders end
their assistants.
A special recognition
was also made to the oldest
female and male members of
the church, Sis. Alberta
Stokes, and Bro. Angus
Walker, they were also pre
sented with roses.

Delta Sigma Theta
Sorority, Inc.- Savannah
Alumnae Chapter celebrated
its Founders Day Friday,
March 27, at Connor's
Temple Baptist Church.
The speaker for the
occasion was Geraldine W.
Hudley, the South Georgia
State Coordinator.
The highlight of the
celebration was the presenta
tion of the Torch Bearer
Awards and the contributions
to selected community
organizations.
The Torch Bearer
Awards were designed to
recognize outstanding mem
bers of the
Savannah/Chatham County
Community. The awards are
intended to honor everyday
men and women who have
committed their time, intel
lect and talents to making
our community and the
world a better place.
This year, the award
categories were in the areas
of Education, Health
Services and Political
Action.
In the Education cate
gory the sorority honored
Lawrence Hutchins, Jr. a
long-time
Savannah/Chatham County
educator, who has dedicated
much of his life to his Alma
Mater-Alfred E. Beach High
School.
Mr. Hutchins spent
some forty-two years mold
ing young minds and sharing
the artistry of music.
For his commitment,
dedication, and passion for
excellence in education,
Delta Sigma Theta Sorority -
Savannah Alumnae Chapter
saluted Lawrence Hutchins,
Jr. with the 2009 Torch
Bearer Award for Excellence
in Education.
In the area of Health
Services, Eugene Nwosu,
M.D., a local cardiologist
was honored.
Dr. Nwosu was bom in
Nigeria. After many trips to
his homeland over the years,
Dr. Nwosu became acutely
aware of the devastation that
the country's economic
downturn had on his people.
As a result, on each of
his visits home, he held free
medical clinics to service
those who otherwise would
receive no medical care.
After more than ten
years of providing free med
ical services he shared his
experience with a colleague
and friend, and in July 2001,
an expanded medical mis
sion team from Savannah
and Detroit, MI traveled to
Nigeria.

Local members of
Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority
recently attended the
Georgia AKA Day At the
Capitol.
This annual legislative
session affords members of
the sorority from across the
state an opportunity to con
vene with the legislators and
present issues of concern to
them.
Sorority members
heard overviews of legisla
tive activities from Rep.
DuBose Porter, Senator
Robert Brown and Rep.
Alisha Thomas Morgan.
Staff members presenting
included Ms. Vanessa Payne,
Chief Financial Officer for
Human Resources and
Commissioner Michael
Thurmond of the Georgia
Department of Labor.
During the Awards
Luncheon, the local graduate
chapter, Gamma Sigma
Omega received a plaque in
recognition of activities
devoted to Voter Education
Service in 2008.
Graduate members in
attendance included
President Clemontine
Washington, Zena McClain,
Carol Russell, Audrey
Singleton, Sharon Stallings,
Connie Cooper and Denise
Cooper.
Britney Wynn, an
undergraduate from
Armstrong Atlantic was also
in attendance.
SSU to hold Summit on
Environmental
Entrepreneurship

University (SSU) will host
the 2009 National Oceanic
and Atmospheric (NOAA)
Summit on Environmental
Entrepreneurship on April
10, 8 a.m. - 1 p.m. at Tiger
Arena.
The summit is spon
sored by the NOAA
Educational Partnership
Program.
“With a busy port here
in Savannah, the environ
mental industry is at the core
of the city’s economy,” said
Dionne Hoskins, Ph.D.,
director of NOAA-sponsored
programs at SSU. “The goal
of the summit, now in its sec
ond year, is to expose high
school, undergraduate and
graduate-level students inter
ested in the sciences to rela
tive business and entrepre
neurial careers.”
Professionals from a
diverse spectrum of environ
ment-related businesses will
be on hand to discuss career
opportunities and offer
