McClain Honored During Health and
Human Service Conference
Dr. Mildred McClain,
co-founder and Executive
Director of The Harambee
House/Citizens for
Environmental Justice
(CFEJ), was one of nine hon-
orees at the 12th Annual
Interfaith Health and Human
Service Conference sponsored
by Sisters United in Human
Services, Inc. on Friday,
October 9th in Atlanta, GA.
The 12th Annual
Interfaith Health and Human
Service conference was held
at the Shareef Abdur-Rahim
Auditorium at Mohammad
Schools in Atlanta, GAThe 2-
day conference provided edu
cational and networking
opportunities for adult and
youth consumers and practi
tioners in all fields of health
and human services including
social work, medicine, behav-

tic health nursing, activity
therapy, home health care, chi
ropractic, physical therapy and
law enforcement.

This award has such great
meaning to me and truly repre
sents the spirit of our mission
at The Harambee House. It
also represents the spirit of
excellence that was instilled
into me as a child by my teach
ers at Harris Street School,
East Broad Elementary School
and John W. Hubert Middle
School. Those teachers
drilled in us a sense of striving
for excellence and that's what I
have been doing for most of
my life,” said Dr. Mildred
McClain, Executive Director
of The Harambee
House/Citizens for
Environmental Justice.
The Harambee
House/Citizens for
Environmental Justice (CFEJ)
is a Savannah-based commu
nity nonprofit with over two
decades of practice helping
people to create safe and
healthy communities that pro
mote health, wellness and
environmental sustainability.
HH/CFEJ's mission is
increasing the participation of
African Americans and other
communities of color in envi
ronmental decision-making at
all levels by providing on
going leadership and technical
assistance to local, state,
national and international
communities and organiza
tions.

Sol C. Johnson High School, has opened a
savings account at Carver State Bank.
Yakub Is saving to open his own business
someday. He is the 3rd generation of his
family to bank at Carver. His mother, Dr.
Emily Crawford, her parents and other

The Great Savannah Tailgate on
October 24
The Savannah Area
Chamber of Commerce and
Savannah State University
(SSU) will host The Great
Savannah Tailgate on
Saturday, October 24 from 3-
5 p.m. under the big tent out
side of Ted Wright Stadium
on the SSU campus.Come
out before the game vs. Old
Dominion and enjoy food,
fellowship and networking
with SSU alumni, athletes,
cheerleaders and mascot.
Admission includes
delicious food, beverages
and a ticket (a $15 value) for
the SSU vs. Old Dominion
football game. Kick-off for
the game is at 5 p.m.R.S.V.P.
is not required. The cost is $5
for Chamber members and
$15 for member guests. For

A.E. Bach Class of 1994 Celebrates
15th Anniversary
Alfred Ely Beach High
School Class of 1994 recently
celebrated their 15-year class
reunion.
Alumni came from as
far away as Alaska, Japan and
Hawaii to show their true blue
and bold gold bulldog spirit
and fellowship with our fel
low alumni.
The reunion started with
a five day Carnival Cruise to
the Caribbean. After spend
ing five days cruising in the
Atlantic, the celebration con
tinued with a two-day land-
lovers reunion began on
Friday, September 11th with
an Icebreaker social at Loco's
Deli & Pub on Broughton
Street.
On Saturday, alumni
converged at the Daffm Park
Lakefront Pavilion for the 1st
Annual "White Paradise"
Low Country Luau.
