Savannah Film Festival Begins
October 31
SCCPSS Director Wins 2009
Phil Pickens Leadership Award
The 12 th annual
Savannah Film Festival,
hosted by the Savannah
College of Art and Design,
will take place from
Saturday, October 31 -
Saturday, November 7.
Films to receive special
gala screenings will include
Jean-Marc Vallee’s “The
Young Victoria”; Oren
Moverman’s “The
Messenger,” with Moverman
and stars Woody Flarrelson
and Ben Foster in atten
dance; Grant Fleslov’s “The
Men Who Stare at Goats”;
Pedro Almodovar’s “Broken
Embraces”; Lone Sherfig’s
“An Education”; the United
States premieres of James
Ivory’s “The City of Your
Final Destination,” with
Ivory in attendance, and
Nick Moran’s “Telstar,” with
Moran and star Con O’Neill
in attendance; Jodie
Markell’s “The Loss of a
Teardrop Diamond” (from a
screenplay by Tennessee
Williams); Cannes Palme
d’Or winner Michael
Haneke’s “The White
Ribbon”; and Lee Daniels’
“Precious: Based on the
Novel ‘Push’ by Sapphire,”
winner of the Grand-Jury
Prize at Sundance and the
Audience Award at the
Toronto Film Festival.

also screen at the festival.
Scott Caan (“Ocean’s 11”),
the writer and star of
“Mercy,” one of the festival’s
competition films, also will
attend.

O'Toole, Michael Douglas,
Jane Fonda, Sidney Lumet,
Kathleen Turner, Norman
Jewison, Tommy Lee Jones,
John Waters, David Benioff,
John Sayles, Brett Ratner,
Masquerade Ball to
Benefit Union Mission
Spine & Sport, along
with honorary chair, Jan
Kramer will host the First
Annual Masquerade Ball
benefiting Union Mission.
The event will be held
on October 23, 2009 at 2 Car
Garage Art Gallery on
Broughton Street from
7:00pm-11:00pm.
The attire is costume or
cocktail and masks will be
available at the door for
guests.
The cost of tickets is
$60 and includes heavy hors'
douevres, open bar and danc
ing. There will be a costume
contest with prizes awarded
in several categories. Tickets
can be purchased at
www.unionmission.org. All
proceeds will benefit Union
Mission.

Michael Sucsy (Emmy-
Award winning “Grey
Gardens”) and writer/director
David Twohy (“Pitch
Black”).

Dr. Mikki Garcia, sen
ior director of the SCCPSS
Department for Exceptional
Children, was awarded the
prestigious 2009 Phil
Pickens Leadership Award
by the Georgia Department
of Education’s Parent
Mentor Partnership. The
award was presented to Dr.
Garcia on October 14, 2009
during the 8th Annual Parent
Mentor Partnership Kick-off
Conference held in Cordele,
Georgia.
The Phil Pickens
Leadership Award is a
statewide honor recognizing
outstanding leadership in the
collaborative work between
home, school and communi
ty to improve outcomes for
students with disabilities;
outstanding contribution to
the Georgia Parent Mentor
Partnership program; and
consistent outstanding lead
ership accomplishments in
special education.
Dr. Garcia has served as
the district’s director of the
Dr. Mikki Garcia
Department for Exceptional
Children since April 2001,
and has the distinction of
being the first special educa
tion administrator to receive
the Georgia Council of
Administrators of Special
Education (G-CASE) New
Special Education
Administrator Award.
Dr. Garcia is the current
president of G-CASE and
president of the Georgia
Federation Council for
Exceptional Children (Ga-
CEC), she is also a past
member and chairperson of
the Georgia Department of
Education State Advisory
Panel for Special Education
and serves as advisor to the
Parent Mentor Partnership
Leadership Council.
The leadership award is
named after Dr. Phil Pickens,
a former Georgia
Department of Education
Special Education Director
who dedicated more than 35
years to improving the edu
cation of children with dis
abilities, and who also
founded the Georgia Parent
Mentor Partnership in 2002.
The mission of the
Georgia Parent Mentor
Partnership is to build effec
tive family, school, and com
munity partnerships that lead
to greater achievement for
students with disabilities.
Since 2002, under the
leadership of Dr. Garcia, the
Savannah-Chatham County
Public School System partic
ipates in this parent driven
initiative which is headed by
the Georgia Department of
Education.
