Education and Job Training to
Chatham County Residents

Homecoming 2009
Savannah State broke open a
close game by out-scoring
Edward Waters 31-12 in the
second half as SSU took
home a 45-12 Homecoming
win before 11,643 fans.
Justin Babb led the onslaught
with a career-high four touch
downs and Kurvin Curry
passed for a career-high 234
yards and two touchdowns.
Babb caught a 52 yard touch
down pass and scored on runs
of 23, 57 and 10 yards. Babb
ended the day with 167 yards
rushing and three catches for
89 yards. SSU (2-6) led 14-
12 at halftime but scored 21
points in the third quarter and
10 more in the fourth. Curry
added a 10 yards touchdown
run, Daniel Heslop scored on
a 9 yard pass and Derek
Williams kicked a 22 yard
field goals and six extra
points. Byron Leggett caught
five passes for 82 yards and
Antwan Allen had seven
tackles. Edward Waters
remains win-less at 0-9.
Hampton To
Induct Ford
The inaugural Hampton
University Athletics Hall of
Fame will welcome its first
members when 15 legendary
names are inducted on
November 20 at 7:30 at the
Student Ballroom on the HU
Campus. Among those being
inducted will be former
Savannah State athletics
director Henry "Hank" Ford,
the winningest head men’s
basketball coach in HU histo-

ry, Ford’s 12-year stint saw
him compile a record of 228-
120, a winning percentage of
.655, best among all of the
Pirates’ former coaches. His
illustrious career saw his
teams win 20 or more games
five times and capture CIAA
tournament championships in
1982 and 1983. He was
named the CIAA tourna
ment’s most outstanding
coach four times and in 1997
he was inducted into the
CIAA Hall of Fame.

Tournament Moves
Back To Atlanta
The Southern Intercollegiate
Athletic Conference has
selected Atlanta, Georgia as
the host city for its 2010
SIAC Men’s and Women’s
Basketball Tournament. The
event will be held March 1-6
and games will be played at
Frank L. Forbes Arena on the
campus of Morehouse
College at the Atlanta
University Center. The 2010
tournament will mark the
77th year for this post season
classic making it the oldest
HBCU basketball tournament
in America, which began in
1934.

Morehouse
A.J. McKenna threw two
touchdown passes and
Demetri Johnson scored on
touchdown runs of 38 and 18
yards as Albany State
downed Morehouse 30-
12.McKenna completed 22 of
34 passes for 273 yards and
completed touchdown passes
to Octavius Staton (66 yards)
and Cessel Taylor (19 yards)
for the Golden Rams (8-1, 7-
1 in the SIAC). Johnson had
91 rushing yards on 14 car
ries.Morehouse (6-3, 5-3)
trailed 17-0 but cut the lead to
17-12 on two Ian Mullen
field goals, one a 51-yarder,
and a 13-yard touchdown

Bus Overturns
A charter bus taking the
Morehouse band to Albany
for a football game over
turned on the morning of
October 31 on Interstate 75
because the driver loss con
trol after trying to avoid
another vehicle. About 13
students sufferred non-life
threatening injuries. Rainy
weather made the roads wet
and likely contributed to the
accident.

In 2010, CFEJ plans to
graduate its fifth class of
20 under-employed and/or
unemployed men and
women living in Chatham
County, In addition to
daily job skills training,
the Worker Education and
Job Training Program par
ticipants will receive other
services and supports
including life and study
skills, counseling, job
placement, free lunch and
transportation cards.

CCFEJ) is accepting appli
cations until December 4,
2009 for its 2010 Worker
Education and Job
Training Program.
CFEJ's Worker
Education and Job
Training Program is open
to adult men and women
aged 18 and older who are
interested in receiving
green job training skills in
construction, HazMat,
lead abatement, mold
remediation and asbestos
removal.
In existence for four
years, the Worker
Education and Job
Training Program has pro
duced 95 graduates with
an 87% job placement rate
at local environmental
remediation, construction
and port businesses.
Funded by the
National Institute for
Environmental Health
Sciences (NJEHS) as part
of a community-university
collaborative with Dr.
Robert Bullard of the
Environmental Justice
Resource Center at Clark
Atlanta University (GA);
Dr. Beverly Wright of the
Deep South Center for
Environmental Justice at
Djllard University (LA);
and Dr. Mildred McClain
of the Harambee House,
Inc./Citizens for
Environmental Justice
(GA), the Worker
Education and Job
Training Program thrives

commitment of a group of
Savannah based business,
community and govern
mental partners. The City
of Savannah graciously
designated St. Pius Family
Resource Center (PRC) as
the official training facili
ty for CFEJ's Worker
Education and Job
Training Program. Local
nonprofits like the FRC
along with businesses like
